Lena Moi: The Story of the Woman Who Reportedly Refused to Dance With Jomo Kenyatta

Lena Moi, the former wife of Kenya’s second president, Daniel arap Moi, is remembered in accounts of the country’s political history for an alleged incident involving founding President Jomo Kenyatta. The story, discussed in Andrew Morton’s biography, Moi: The Making of an African Statesman, centres on a reported dance invitation that allegedly placed her husband in an uncomfortable position.

Lena married Daniel arap Moi in 1950, several decades before he became Kenya’s president in 1978. She was reportedly a committed Christian whose religious beliefs influenced her personal decisions, including her attitude towards dancing.

According to the account, Jomo Kenyatta once invited Lena to dance at a formal dinner. She allegedly declined the invitation because of her religious convictions. The reported refusal is said to have embarrassed Moi, who was keen to maintain good relations with Kenyatta, an influential figure in Kenya’s political leadership.

However, questions about the incident have persisted because photographs reportedly showing Lena dancing with Kenyatta have been cited in discussions about the story. The images have raised questions about whether she eventually accepted the invitation or whether later accounts presented an incomplete version of what happened. Without independently verified details establishing the photographs’ context and the sequence of events, the circumstances remain uncertain.

Lena and Moi eventually separated in 1974, four years before he became president following Kenyatta’s death in August 1978. The alleged dance incident has been linked to discussions about difficulties in their marriage, but there is insufficient evidence to establish it as the main reason for their separation.

The story offers a glimpse into the personal lives of Kenya’s early political leaders, where religious beliefs, marriage and political relationships sometimes intersected. However, the reported encounter should be treated cautiously because the available account does not establish exactly what happened or explain the full circumstances behind the couple’s separation.
