HARTSEER: Two learners from Strandfontein Secondary School have died this term.

TRAGEDY has hit a Strandfontein high school twice during the third term after the deaths of two learners in separate incidents outside of the school premises.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed the deaths of both learners.
The causes of death have not been disclosed because of its sensitive circumstances.
It is understood that both learners died during the third term. One of the deaths occurred at a residence this week.
Bronagh Hammond, director of communications at the WCED, said: “The WCED is aware of the tragic deaths of two learners associated with the school this term.
“Out of respect for the families concerned and the privacy of the learners, we will not comment on the circumstances surrounding these deaths. Any determination of the cause of death is a matter for the relevant authorities.”
“Our sincere condolences go out to the families, friends and the broader school community during this extremely difficult time,” Hammond said.
She said support had been provided to members of the school community affected by the tragedies.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened into the death of one of the learners, who died this week.
“Strandfontein police registered an inquest for investigation following the death of a young boy on 2 September 2026 at about 4.38pm in Bayview,” he said.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
