Local Government Minister Ben Phiri Challenges Malawians Studying and Working In China To Look Beyond Academic Qualifications

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has challenged Malawians studying and working in China to look beyond academic qualifications and acquire the systems and practical knowledge that have contributed to China’s development.

Phiri made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Association of Malawians in China at Peking University in Beijing.

According to the minister, Malawians in China should use their time in developing clear plans for applying their knowledge and international exposure to Malawi’s development challenges.

He added that China is an important learning environment for Malawi, particularly in agriculture, technology, industrial development, infrastructure, institutional management, and value-chain development.

The Minister also stressed on the need for Malawians living abroad to develop a stronger sense of patriotism and use their knowledge, networks, and opportunities for the country’s benefit.

Speaking on behalf of the Association of Malawians in China, Blessings Chiwosi, welcomed the Minister and expressed the Association’s interest in understanding how the Ministry plans to maximize China-Malawi cooperation for the benefit of local councils and communities.
