Israel accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of lying Monday after he linked social-media networks associated with Israel and Russia to misinformation that may have contributed to July’s mass migration crossing into Ceuta.
Sánchez said during an interview with Cadena SER that false claims circulated through networks connected to Russia, Israel and the international far right.
He did not accuse the Israeli or Russian governments of organizing the crossings. Sánchez said the activity did not necessarily originate from state actors and acknowledged that Spain had not established the complete circumstances surrounding the crisis.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar rejected the allegation in a post on X.
“In his interview with Cadena SER today, he lied again,” Sa’ar wrote, calling the accusation a “brazen lie.” He said Sánchez was spreading defamatory claims to divert attention from what he described as the Spanish government’s failure to manage the country.
Sánchez said criminal organizations had exploited misleading interpretations of a Spanish Supreme Court ruling concerning immediate returns of people entering Ceuta by swimming. The resulting messages allegedly suggested that migrants reaching the territory by sea could not be returned.
