Delta Gov Candidate Condemns NDC Campaign Disruption

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Delta State for the 2027 general elections, Chris Iyovwaye, has condemned the disruption of the party’s campaign in Effurun.

He said that the issue would be probed and alleged that the police were called to leave the location of the campaign.

Iyovwaye said this on Monday during an interview on Channel’s Television *The Morning *Brief, saying the authorities needed to rise to be able to see that this doesn’t happen again and again in the democratic process

“It was supposed to be a peaceful process, and we had people who were seemingly sponsored by the APC to stop it,” he alleged. “It was obvious, and there was another Collins who came and was caught with an AK-47. These are deliberate acts by people who want to stop the process, and it is very dangerous for our community.

“We are really asking that the authorities will rise so that we mitigate this kind of thing from happening again. It happened with myself and the former Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; we had the same incident. It was a bloodshed.”

His comment comes amid the disruption of the NDC campaign for candidates in Effurun ahead of



The governorship candidate also alleged that the police escort was called to leave the campaign ground and described the situation as a ‘dangerous precedent’

“The very dangerous precedent that happened that day was when we got to the finish line, there was not a single police presence; that’s dangerous. All the police that were escorting were all gone. I’m sure probably there must have been a call from the high places to say they should leave; it’s a dangerous precedent, and I think that is not good for the democratic process,” Iyovwaye alleged.

He also noted that the party wrote to the police before carrying out the campaign.

“We wrote to the Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, and DPO. Even from the starting point, the DPO of the area came to address people; those processes were done, and it’s the normal thing to do before having any engagement with the public, and they were properly done and documented,” he added.

Speaking further on the breakfast show, Iyovwaye alleged that some of their people were shot.

“We have our people who were shot, and they were quickly taken to a nearby hospital that is a subject for investigation. The hospital could be called where these people were treated for gunshot.

“Please, we need to understand who they are dealing with, particularly with myself; I have lived in that particular area for decades,” the candidate stated.

Speaking further, he said, “I have played a role in those places, and I know what happens there, so when people say they are from there, I wonder. I have been there for decades on a daily basis and give to people from that community, and when we see people shooting at him, it’s very worrisome.

“We are apprehensive, to put it lightly of the way things are going in the political process. I’m very worried for my safety, my party is worried, and my supporters are all worried with the developments that you see.”
