The final phone calls made by pastors before a deadly road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway have left families and church members struggling to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones.
The accident happened on Sunday, October 25, 2026, near Kanga, close to Mtito Andei in Makueni County. A bus carrying church members returning from a burial in Kakamega collided with a lorry, killing 24 people and leaving several others injured.
One of the most painful accounts involved Pastor Joseph Vura, who called his assistant, Joseph Matia, at around 6:45 a.m. to explain that he would arrive late for a morning prayer service in Mombasa.
According to Matia, the conversation was cheerful. Vura spoke about the journey and the pastors travelling with him, explaining that they had left their congregations under the care of their assistants.
Neither man knew that the conversation would be their last. A few hours later, Matia received news of the accident and subsequently learnt that Vura was among those who had died.
Another pastor, Isaac Juma of Grace Healing Centre, had also contacted his assistant before the journey, asking him to take care of the church in his absence.
The pastors were returning to the Coast after attending the burial of Bishop Isaiah Kiganane in Marakusi village, Kakamega County. The group had left on Saturday afternoon and travelled through the night.
According to accounts from survivors, the passengers stopped for breakfast in Mtito Andei at around 7 a.m. The crash happened shortly after they resumed their journey towards Mombasa.
Preliminary information from authorities pointed to possible improper overtaking, although the exact circumstances remained under investigation. Reports also raised questions about driver fatigue after claims that the bus driver had travelled for many hours without a replacement.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety along the busy highway. It came just weeks after another crash near Salama, where 17 people died in an accident involving several vehicles.
