Michael Carrick’s approach against Ipswich Town proved that Ineos are paving the way for something incredibly valuable for Manchester United going forward.
Manchester United thrashed Ipswich Town on Sunday evening and the Red Devils chalked up their first Premier League points of the 2026-27 season at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes scored a stunning hat-trick and Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net as well, while Jacob Greaves put the ball in the back of his own net.
Outside of Man Utd’s 5-2 scoreline against Ipswich, the Premier League clash was an example of where Ineos’ continued work at the Red Devils is shining through now.

Manchester United were already 4-1 up against Ipswich Town by the time that Michael Carrick brought on his five subs during a seven-minute period.
Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro came on first in the 73rd and 74th minutes respectively before the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko.
However, United manager Carrick was able to demonstrate the depth that is slowly building within key areas of the Red Devils first-team squad at Old Trafford.
United fans have rightfully bemoaned the lack of depth in the Premier League club squad, including when it came to the options that came off the bench.
It felt refreshing to see both a variety of defensive and attacking options — all of which were signings under Ineos — take to the field late in the second half.
Each of the players who took to the field against Ipswich was an important first-team star and not even fringe players who secure minutes here and there.
Even with a commanding lead over Ipswich at that point, it showed that the Red Devils were able to bring much-needed quality off the bench at Old Trafford.
There is still a lot of work left for Ineos to complete in the full overhaul of the United squad, but Sunday’s match was a bright sign of where the project is working.
United’s first Premier League match under Ruben Amorim at Portman Road in November 2024 saw the Red Devils turn to a much weaker set of options.
The Red Devils had lost their 1-0 lead before half-time and Ruben Amorim’s substitutes in the second half included Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount.
Alongside Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Luke Shaw all climbed off the bench in United’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich.
Only two of the five players that Amorim brought on the pitch were Ineos signings after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team had only taken control of football operations in 2024.
Fast-forward from the 2024-25 Premier League clash to today’s fixture from the 2026-27 campaign and the quality in the substitute options is night and day clear.
