The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for strong winds and rough seas for multi-day fishing vessels and the naval community operating in the deep sea areas of the Bay of Bengal.
According to the warning issued by the Department’s Natural Disaster Early Warning Centre, a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining southeastern sea areas has intensified into a deep depression and is moving westward.
The Department of Meteorology has indicated that the system is highly likely to intensify further over the coming days, potentially developing into a cyclone and then a severe cyclone.
Key Risks and Safety Instructions
Strong Winds and Heavy Rain: Wind speeds in the affected sea areas could occasionally reach 70 kilometres per hour, accompanied by heavy thundershowers.
The affected sea areas are likely to become very rough, making fishing activities extremely dangerous.
Fishing and naval activities in the sea areas between 10 and 20 degrees north latitude and 80 and 95 degrees east longitude should be suspended until further notice. Vessels currently operating in these areas have been advised to move immediately towards safer locations.
The Department of Meteorology has further urged the fishing and naval communities to remain highly vigilant and closely monitor future weather advisories issued by the Department.
