Two suspected cable thieves were caught on camera allegedly cutting cable infrastructure in Bonteheuwel.

Two suspected cable thieves have been caught on camera on a Bonteheuwel rooftop, with one allegedly using a hand saw to cut through cable infrastructure.
In a video circulating online, the two can be seen on the roof of a building, with one working on the cabling while the other stands nearby.
The footage was shared on Facebook by Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie, who said the two had been caught allegedly “helping themselves” to cable infrastructure.
“Clearly, they thought the cables were part of a ‘help yourself’ special,” McKenzie wrote.
He appealed to residents who recognised the pair to pass on information that could help identify them.
“We’d like to pay them a visit and have a little chat but first, we need your help identifying them,” McKenzie said.
“If you recognise them, please send us the information via our tip-off channels.
“Let’s find them before they find another cable!” he said.
Cable theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure have been an ongoing problem across Cape Town, with the City spending millions repairing damaged and stolen infrastructure.
In March 2026, the City said it had spent R44.5 million on repairs to vandalised and stolen electricity infrastructure, highlighting the scale of the problem across the metro.
The City previously reported that its Metal Theft Unit made 88 arrests between July 2025 and April 2026 and recovered more than a kilometre of stolen cable.
Residents have repeatedly been urged to report cable theft and suspicious activity around electricity infrastructure to the authorities.
