Former Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu could appear before the parliamentary committee investigating the June 10, 2024 plane crash to provide information on issues surrounding the aircraft’s black box.
Committee chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda says the committee has not ruled out Kunkuyu’s appearance, but will first assess key witnesses and issues that need to be addressed during the final phase of the inquiry.
Kunkuyu, who served as Information Minister under the Malawi Congress Party administration, requested in May this year to be among the first people to appear before the committee.
He said his interest in appearing was partly because questions surrounding the aircraft’s black box continue to arise during the inquiry.
Kunkuyu said it would therefore be in the public interest for the committee to hear from all those who have been mentioned in connection with the black box.
However, the former minister, who is also MP for Dedza Mulunduni, was not invited during either the first or second phase of the inquiry.
Manda says Kunkuyu could be considered during the third phase, when the committee is expected to engage politicians.
“At the right time, the committee will sit down and assess whether to invite Honourable Moses Kunkuyu to testify in the appropriate phase, which is the third phase,” said Manda.
He said the committee is still examining key witnesses as part of the ongoing second phase of the inquiry.
“We are still calling the witnesses, and I cannot rule out the possibility of Honourable Kunkuyu coming. We will engage politicians in the final, third phase,” Manda said.
The June 10, 2024 plane crash claimed the lives of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.
