I never thought I’d become an actor – Bisola Aiyeola

Popular Nollywood actress and entertainer Bisola Aiyeola has revealed that acting was never part of her original career plan, as music was her first love before an unexpected opportunity during her participation in Project Fame opened the door to Nollywood.

Speaking during a podcast interview with PaulAndBaaj, the single mother of one recounted how her journey into the movie industry began almost by accident.

“Music was my first love, not acting and performing as people think. I didn’t even know that I would ever be an actor. I was always out there chasing music,” she said.

Aiyeola said that before participating in Project Fame, she entered several music competitions, some of which she claimed were fraudulent.

“Back then, we used to pay N1,000 or N500 for forms, and funny as it may sound, when you got to the audition venue, you would not see anyone. The supposed organisers had squandered the money and abandoned the competition,” she recalled.

Her fortunes, however, began to change during Project Fame, where she received acting lessons from veteran actress Joke Silva.

During the competition, director of photography Bimbo Ogunsanya also noticed her versatility and introduced her to acting.

“One of the DPs there, Uncle Bimbo Ogunsanya, gave me my first acting gig. He said I was such a character during the Project Fame competition. He was amazed at how I could change my voice, mimic people and all that. He later offered me a role in a Yoruba television series, Sababi, which marked the beginning of my acting career. Honestly, before then, I never, ever thought of acting because I always loved to sing. Singing was like breathing to me. While growing up, I always found myself entertaining my mum and people around me with music,” she said.

Despite her celebrity status, Aiyeola also said she is not naturally outgoing. However, she makes deliberate efforts to attend industry events and cinema meet-and-greet sessions, particularly when promoting her movies.

“I am not really outgoing, but for industry events, I try my best to be there, as well as cinema meet-and-greets,” she said.
