Manchester City have formally appealed the Premier League Commission’s verdict in the club’s long-running financial case, insisting that the ruling contains significant errors of law, principle and fact.
The club confirmed on Friday that it lodged a “comprehensive” appeal at 7pm on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
An independent commission had found that City arranged what it described as “sham” contracts with several commercial partners between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.
According to the commission’s findings, the arrangements formed part of what it described as a “disguised funding scheme” designed to artificially increase the club’s reported revenues by approximately £830 million.
City have rejected the findings and maintained that they are innocent of the accusations brought against them by the Premier League.
In a statement, the club said its appeal was based on multiple grounds and argued that the commission’s opinion was unsafe.

“Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter,” the club said.
“The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.”
City also said it had substantial evidence to support its position in the case.
“The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case,” the statement added.
The club said it would continue to respect the legal process but would not comment further while the proceedings remain ongoing.
“We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete,” City said.
The appeal marks the latest stage in a case that has placed the club’s financial arrangements under scrutiny and could have significant implications depending on the eventual outcome of the proceedings.
