National Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has welcomed delegates to Kumasi for the party’s National Delegates Conference and National Executives elections, pledging to unite and rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
In a message to delegates arriving in the Ashanti Regional capital, Mr Agyarko, a former Energy Minister, said the conference presented an opportunity for the NPP to reset its structures and position itself for what he described as a decisive victory in 2028.
The conference is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, under the theme: “One Party, One Purpose: United for Victory.”
Mr Agyarko said the party could not rely on “business as usual” if it was to regain power, arguing that it required tested, principled and fearless leadership with the grassroots at the centre of its operations.
His proposed leadership agenda, which he described as “R.I.S.E.”, is built around four pillars: Reconciliation and Genuine Unity, Integrity of the Constitution and Discipline, Support for the Grassroots, and Election Readiness for 2028.
R.I.S.E. agenda
On reconciliation, Mr Agyarko pledged to work towards healing what he described as internal wounds and factional divisions, while restoring mutual respect among party members.
He also promised to uphold the NPP’s constitution and ensure that the party’s rules applied equally to all members, regardless of their positions.
According to him, discipline, transparency and fairness would be central to the administration he is proposing for the party.
On grassroots support, the former Energy Minister said polling station and constituency executives, who he described as carrying much of the burden of election campaigns, needed practical assistance rather than rhetoric.
He proposed year-round welfare packages, structured capacity-building programmes and direct, predictable logistical support for grassroots executives.
Mr Agyarko also pledged to establish what he described as a modern election and ballot-security architecture extending from polling stations to the national level to prepare the party for the 2028 elections.
He said the objective would be to support the presidential bid of the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, while securing a parliamentary majority.
Surveys
Mr Agyarko enters Saturday’s contest amid varying findings from recent surveys on the chairmanship race.
A Ghana Watch Initiative International (GWII) delegate preference survey conducted from September 1 to 12 placed him first among the candidates, with 51.81 per cent support from 2,098 constituency executives sampled across all 16 regions and 276 constituencies. Former NPP General Secretary John Boadu followed with 32.32 per cent.
A separate University of Ghana study also found Mr Agyarko recording the highest figure, 60.7 per cent, when respondents were asked which candidate best matched characteristics they considered important for the National Chairman position. The researchers, however, cautioned that their findings represented respondents’ views and expectations and should not be interpreted as an independent prediction of the election outcome.
Other recent polling has produced a different picture. A September 30 Global InfoAnalytics poll put Mr Boadu ahead of Mr Agyarko by 48 per cent to 38 per cent among its sampled delegates. :chatgpt-content-reference.
The differing findings underscore the competitiveness of the contest as delegates prepare to elect the party’s national executives.
Mr Agyarko, meanwhile, urged delegates arriving from across Ghana and the party’s external branches to see the conference as an opportunity to strengthen the NPP.
He described the delegates as the “lifeblood” and “foundation” of the party and called for unity of purpose as the party prepares for the next general election.
