West Nicholson, Tongogara win Gwanda, military derbies in inaugural Dream Inn and GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup

WEST Nicholson and Tongogara FC booked their places in the semi-finals of the inaugural Dream Inn and GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup after edging Gwanda Pirates and Chapungu FC respectively on Saturday.

In what was dubbed the Gwanda derby pitting West Nicholson which ended in a 1-1 stalemate before a penalty shootout, the latter won 11-10.

Dubbed the “The Military Derby” Chapungu and Tongogara renewed their rivalry with the army side 2-1 winners over Tongogara. It was the third meeting between the two uniformed forces sides this season after they previously clashed in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup and in the league.

Previous encounters ended in draws, with Chapungu going through on penalties in the Munhumutapa Cup.

Action continues on Sunday in the Dream Inn and GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup where log leaders Blanket Mine will be up against Kwekwe-based Grain Tigers in another quarter-final, while Kwekwe United will face Super Strikers in the other match.

The competition received a significant injection when businessman and gold magnet Shepherd Chahwanda, through his business entities Dream Inn and GMI, launched the cup with US$16 000 in sponsorship.

The final has been set for Chahwanda Stadium later this season.
