Oyo: Police arrest three men over alleged homosexual acts

Police operatives in Oyo State have arrested three men in Saki over allegations of engaging in same-sex acts.

The suspects were identified as Ayomide Lukeman, 22, Shuaib Aremu, 22, and Abdul-Rasheed Mufeed, 23. They were apprehended by operatives of the Oyo State Police Command Monitoring Unit, Saki Operational Base.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the arrests followed intelligence received on September 29, 2026, regarding the alleged involvement of some individuals in what the police described as unnatural sexual conduct.

According to Ayanlade, the Commissioner of Police directed the Monitoring Unit to investigate the information and take appropriate action, leading to the arrest of the three suspects.

“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, directed the Command Monitoring Unit to verify the intelligence and take appropriate action, culminating in the arrest of three suspects,” he said.

The police spokesperson added that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects had allegedly admitted to engaging in homosexual acts.

He said two of the men allegedly confessed to having had sexual relations with the third suspect on several occasions, adding that they reportedly referred to the latter as their “wife”.

Ayanlade stated that investigations were continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine whether other individuals were involved.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to conducting the investigation professionally, impartially and in accordance with the law, assuring the public that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.

Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013, criminalises same-sex marriages and civil unions, while other provisions of the law prohibit certain same-sex relationships and activities. The law prescribes penalties of up to 14 years’ imprisonment for individuals convicted of entering into a same-sex marriage or civil union.
