Haley Stevens Struggles to Explain Sudden Mike Rogers Endorsement as Anderson Cooper Challenges Her CNN Interview

Michigan Democratic Representative Haley Stevens struggled to justify her decision to endorse Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers during a tense CNN interview with Anderson Cooper on Sunday night.

Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, maintained that she was confident in her decision despite telling fellow Democrats only hours earlier that she would not support Rogers.

Her unexpected switch has triggered widespread anger within the Democratic Party, with senior politicians condemning her move and several members of her congressional staff reportedly resigning.

President Donald Trump, however, welcomed the endorsement.

CNN Interview Exposes Questions Over Overnight U-Turn

During the interview, Cooper repeatedly asked Stevens to explain what had prompted her change of position between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Stevens initially described her decision as a relief, claiming El-Sayed had become increasingly angry despite her efforts to support his campaign.

She said she had previously tried to help him and had endorsed him, but suggested his behaviour had become a growing concern.

Cooper then raised a conversation Stevens had reportedly held with fellow Michigan Democrat Debbie Dingell the previous evening.

Dingell understood that Stevens had no intention of endorsing Rogers.

Asked what had changed overnight, Stevens said she had spent time reflecting on the election before reaching her decision.

She explained that she had woken up feeling clear about what she wanted to do and described her endorsement as something that reflected her personal convictions.

Stevens Refuses to Identify Specific Turning Point

Cooper continued pressing Stevens on whether something had happened overnight to influence her decision, asking whether she had spoken to anyone, spent the night reconsidering her position or experienced a particular moment that changed her thinking.

Stevens responded that she had been alone with her thoughts and had written down her reflections.

She again criticised El-Sayed, accusing him of becoming increasingly angry, but did not identify a specific incident that had prompted her endorsement of Rogers.

Cooper pointed out that El-Sayed’s behaviour could not have changed dramatically between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, suggesting that something else must have influenced her decision.

Stevens maintained that her position was final, declaring that she was an independent woman who had made up her mind.

Church Appearance Marked Dramatic Break With Democrats

The interview came hours after Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit, publicly backing the Republican candidate.

Her appearance marked a departure from earlier plans to campaign alongside El-Sayed and prominent Democratic figures, including Congressman Jim Clyburn.

Stevens had previously been excluded from the Democratic gathering following disagreements over an advertisement produced by an outside group.

The advertisement linked American support for Israel to the rising cost of living.

El-Sayed had publicly distanced himself from the advertisement on Saturday, a response Stevens initially welcomed.

However, by Sunday morning, she had switched her support to his Republican opponent.

Cooper questioned whether being excluded from the church event had contributed to her decision, but Stevens declined to identify the dispute as the reason for her endorsement.

Cooper Challenges Stevens Over Previous Criticism of Rogers

The CNN anchor also confronted Stevens with a social media statement she published in August warning against giving Republicans another Senate seat.

In the post, Stevens had argued that Democrats could not afford to give what she described as another MAGA seat to Trump’s allies in November.

Cooper asked how she could now justify supporting Rogers, given her previous warning.

Rather than directly addressing the apparent contradiction, Stevens returned to her criticism of El-Sayed, questioning his conduct and political associations.

She also raised concerns about his appearances alongside controversial online streamer Hasan Piker and some of his political connections.

Stevens nevertheless maintained that she remained a committed Democrat.

As the questioning continued, she appeared frustrated and suggested Cooper was also unhappy with her decision.

The anchor rejected that suggestion, explaining that his frustration came from her repeated failure to answer his questions directly.

Their exchange became increasingly uncomfortable when Cooper questioned the timing of her endorsement and paused to give Stevens an opportunity to elaborate.

When she asked whether he had posed a question, Cooper replied that he was giving her an opportunity to fill the silence.

Senior Democrats Condemn Stevens’ Endorsement

Stevens’ endorsement prompted an immediate backlash from prominent members of her party.

Her longtime chief of staff resigned following the announcement, with other members of her congressional team reportedly leaving as well.

In a statement, the departing chief of staff said they were shocked and heartbroken by the congresswoman’s decision.

Stevens, responding to questions about the resignations, said her congressional office was already winding down and maintained that her staff members were entitled to hold their own political opinions.

Dingell, who appeared on CNN immediately after Stevens, described the interview as one of the most painful she had watched.

She also disclosed that she had been concerned about Stevens throughout the previous week.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who supported Stevens during the primary, condemned her endorsement of Rogers as a despicable betrayal.

Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel also criticised the congresswoman, accusing her of abandoning the principles she had previously claimed to support.

He indicated that she would no longer have a place in the party.

El-Sayed Dismisses Political Fallout

El-Sayed played down the controversy while continuing his campaign activities alongside fellow Democrats.

Speaking to reporters, he said he was concentrating on voters rather than Stevens’ decision or the political reaction surrounding it.

He also indicated that the congresswoman was not occupying his attention, adding that the dispute did not matter to him.

The Democratic Senate candidate had already publicly distanced himself from the controversial advertisement that contributed to the disagreement with Stevens.

Trump Welcomes Stevens’ Decision to Back Rogers

Republicans welcomed Stevens’ endorsement, with Trump publicly praising the congresswoman for supporting Rogers.

In a post on Truth Social, the president described her as a highly respected Democrat and characterised her decision as an act of bravery.

Speaking ahead of a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, Trump said Stevens had expressed views that few people were willing to voice.

He also revealed that he would welcome her joining the Republican Party.

Rogers, who appeared alongside Stevens at Perfecting Church with his wife, Kristi, said he was honoured to receive her endorsement.

Despite the criticism from Democratic leaders and the departure of members of her staff, Stevens insisted that her decision did not mean she was abandoning the party.

She maintained that she would continue supporting Democratic candidates in other races, describing her endorsement of Rogers as a decision concerning just one vote.
