The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 14 new confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the total number of infections in the country this year to 1,035.
According to the agency’s latest situation report released in Abuja, the new cases were recorded in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Benue states.
The NCDC confirmed that the overall death toll from the disease has risen to 252, with the case fatality rate reaching 24.4 percent. As of week 33 of the outbreak, at least 23 states across 117 local government areas have recorded at least one confirmed case.
Lassa fever is a viral illness spread to humans through food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, as well as through direct person-to-person contact.
The NCDC continues to urge the public to practice good personal hygiene, keep food in rodent-proof containers, and visit health facilities immediately upon experiencing symptoms.
