Rift within Rezeigat after Al-Nawaiba break away from tribal leadership

The Al-Nawaiba, one of the three major sections of the Rezeigat tribe in Sudan’s East Darfur State, announced last Friday that it was withdrawing from the authority of Rezeigat Nazir Mahmoud Musa Madbo.

In a statement, the Al- Nawaiba traditional administration said it was formally breaking away from the leadership of Nazir Mahmoud Musa Madbo. The statement was read by Al- Nawaiba Executive Administration Office chairman Omda Omar Khalid Mohamed Nour, who said the group’s traditional administration was “clearly and responsibly” announcing its withdrawal from Madbo’s leadership.

He said the decision was part of efforts to reorganize local traditional affairs and establish a clear position on the matter.

The Al- Nawaiba administration reaffirmed its commitment to the customs, traditions, and social values that bind the group to the other branches of the Rezeigat and to other tribes and social groups. It also pledged to preserve ties of brotherhood, peaceful coexistence, and good neighborly relations.

The statement further said the Al- Nawaiba would fully comply with directives issued by the East Darfur State Security Committee in an effort to safeguard security and uphold the authority and control of the state.

For his part, Rezeigat Nazir Mahmoud Musa Madbo told Radio Tamazuj that the Al- Nawaiba were “family” and that he was ready to sit down with them to address the issues that had led to the statement.

The Rezeigat are among Sudan’s largest tribes and wield significant influence, with a number of Rapid Support Forces leaders and many of its fighters belonging to the tribe.
