Gavin Bazunu Pulls Out of Israel Clash Over Gaza as Ireland Squad Votes to Play Controversial Nations League Fixture

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has defended his decision to withdraw from the national team’s UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel, stressing that his position is directed at the killing of civilians in the region and not at Israeli or Jewish people.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper publicly explained his decision on Saturday after hours of tense discussions inside the Irish camp in Debrecen, Hungary, where the squad ultimately voted by a “significant majority” to fulfil Sunday’s fixture.

Bazunu Says Representing Ireland ‘Means Everything’

Bazunu said withdrawing was particularly difficult because of the importance he places on representing his country.

In a statement posted online, the goalkeeper described himself as a person of strong faith who tries to live according to his principles.

He said those beliefs left him unable to participate in the upcoming matches against Israel.

“My decision is based purely upon my belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong,” Bazunu said, adding that his position was not against Israeli people or the Jewish community.

He described the situation as one of the rare moments in life when a person has an opportunity to stand for something larger than themselves.

Ireland Players Hold Hours of Talks in Team Hotel

Bazunu’s position contributed to an extraordinary day inside the Irish camp.

Ireland’s scheduled pre-match press conference was postponed and training was delayed while players remained at their hotel discussing whether the team should proceed with the Israel fixture.

FAI chief executive David Courell later confirmed that a vote was held after approximately four hours of discussions involving players, coaching staff and executives.

Courell said a “significant majority” supported continuing with the fixture.

Brian Kerr Reports 14-8 Vote in Favour of Playing

Former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr separately said the player vote finished 14-8 in favour of playing Israel and that Bazunu was absent from the vote.

The FAI publicly confirmed the existence and overall outcome of the vote but did not confirm those precise numbers. The official position was that a significant majority of the squad supported fulfilling the fixture.

Ireland will therefore face Israel at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen on Sunday, September 27. A second fixture between the countries is scheduled for October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia, behind closed doors.

Bazunu Stands Apart as Ireland Proceeds With Fixture

While the majority decided to play, Bazunu removed himself from participation.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson confirmed the goalkeeper would not be involved against Israel.

Bazunu had originally been selected alongside Caoimhín Kelleher and Max O’Leary as one of Ireland’s three goalkeepers for the Nations League window.

A source described as close to Bazunu told the Mail on Sunday that his family supported his decision and regarded his stance as courageous.

Hallgrímsson’s ‘Genocide’ Remark Had Already Inflamed Debate

The dispute surrounding the match had intensified before Bazunu’s withdrawal.

Hallgrímsson previously said Ireland were “playing against genocide” when discussing the circumstances surrounding the Israel fixtures, comments that prompted a furious response from the Israeli Football Association.

Israel rejects accusations that it is committing genocide in Gaza. The issue remains the subject of international legal and political disputes, including proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported more than 73,000 Palestinian deaths since the war began, according to an Associated Press report published ahead of the Ireland-Israel fixtures.

Calls for Ireland to Boycott Israel Had Been Growing

Pressure on the Irish team did not begin with Bazunu.

There have been protests and organised campaigns urging Ireland not to play the fixtures, while more than 160 Irish sports figures signed an open letter calling for a boycott.

The FAI had already debated the issue formally.

At an extraordinary general meeting in July, delegates voted by 75 to 32, with three abstentions, to endorse the association’s decision to fulfil its Nations League obligations. That represented 68 per cent support for proceeding with the matches.

FAI Had Previously Sought Israel’s Suspension

The controversy has been complicated by the FAI’s own previous position.

The association had sought Israel’s suspension from international competition over alleged breaches of football regulations connected with the conflict and occupation, but UEFA did not suspend Israel.

The FAI subsequently decided that Ireland would fulfil the scheduled matches, while moving the October 4 fixture away from Ireland to Serbia because of operational and security considerations.

Irish supporters will not be facilitated with stadium access for either Israel fixture, while the October match will be played entirely behind closed doors.

Brian Kerr Turns Criticism on FAI Leadership

Kerr has also strongly criticised the association’s handling of the controversy.

The former Ireland manager called for the FAI board to resign and accused officials of helping what he characterised as Israeli “sportswashing.”

That accusation represents Kerr’s political assessment of the association’s actions rather than an established fact.

For the FAI, the competing consideration has been its obligation to fulfil UEFA fixtures and the potential consequences for Irish football if the national team refuses to play.

Ireland Moves Forward Without Bazunu

After one of the most politically charged days in recent Irish football history, the immediate outcome is now clear: Ireland intends to play Israel, but Bazunu will not participate.

For the goalkeeper, the decision represents a personal line he says he cannot cross despite his commitment to the national team.

For his teammates, the majority decision was different.

They will take the field in Debrecen after an internal debate that moved far beyond football, while Bazunu’s withdrawal ensures the controversy surrounding Ireland’s fixtures against Israel will continue regardless of what happens on the pitch.
