Efutuakwa Traditional Council orders spiritual purification, threatens market closure over alleged defilement of minor

​The Efutuakwa Traditional Council has threatened to shut down the Assin Fosu Station Market if market leadership fails to cooperate with an upcoming spiritual purification exercise, following allegations of sexual assault involving a minor.

​The issue centres on a girl, reported to be between 14 and 17 years old, who is currently seven months pregnant.

Allegations surfaced that the victim’s father, alongside another watchman identified as Joe, had been sexually exploiting her on the market grounds.

​The victim’s father is currently in police custody facing charges of incest. He has denied all allegations of having a sexual relationship with his daughter.

​Meanwhile, the second suspect, Joe, was initially arrested on defilement charges. However, police subsequently released him after the girl stated during statements that she was 17 years old, contradicting initial reports that she was 14.

​Addressing the matter, Osahene Adjei Kwame III, Chief of Assin Fosu Akrofuom, revealed that traditional leaders are treating the incident as a grave spiritual transgression.

According to the chief, the local deity, River Onwer, has reportedly appeared to several market leaders, a development traditional authorities warn could carry severe spiritual consequences for the community if left unaddressed.

​To avert potential calamity, the traditional council has summoned market leadership, the young girl, and the watchman to appear before Nananom at the Okumanini Palace in Assin Fosu.

The meeting will determine the next steps regarding both the legal situation and the mandatory cleansing rituals for the market.

​Traditional authorities have warned that failure by market officials to fully comply with the ritual process will result in an immediate and total shutdown of the Assin Fosu Station Market.
