WARD 41 Harare West Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe has warned residents against invading wetlands or occupying council land without lawful authority.
Speaking at a Ward 41 feedback and pre-budget consultative meeting on Saturday, Clr Kadzombe said wetlands were important for flood protection and the preservation of biodiversity.
“If you want a residential or commercial stand, follow the correct legal procedures,” Clr Kadzombe said.
She also called for concerted efforts to rid the community of drug peddlers and illicit brew outlets.
She urged residents to report suspected drug dealers and shebeens anonymously to her or the officer-in-charge at Marlborough Police Station.
“Let us protect our community and not allow shebeens to destroy our neighbourhoods,” she said.
The meeting also observed a moment of silence in honour of residents who lost their lives during a five-month spate of armed robberies in the area.
Cllr Kadzombe said the robberies had since stopped.
“But we never know when they may return. I encourage residents to support neighbourhood watches in your areas and assist the Zimbabwe Republic Police by volunteering on patrols,” she said.
Clr Kadzombe said the ward is seeing an increase in theft of manhole covers, vehicle tyres, fuel, batteries, house number signs, chickens and dogs.
She said reckless driving has resulted in the death of over 120 people since the beginning of the year.
“This is something that could have been avoided if the law was followed. I appeal to drivers to obey road rules, observe speed limits and respect the lives of others,” said Clr Kadzombe.
She said the city continues to process development applications and enforce compliance.
Cllr Kadzombe told residents that building plans, subdivisions, boundary walls, extensions and changes of land use require council approval.
She said the city has repaired 116 lights in Ward 41.
“Residents are encouraged to report faulty street lights and vandalism promptly. Some suburbs do not have lighting infrastructure because their developers have not satisfied the requirements of council to get compliance certificates,” said Clr Kadzombe.
