Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Lilongwe on Friday, the ministry’s Principal Secretary Jameson Ndalama cited inadequate access to finance, limited business skills, technology and intellectual property protection among the challenges affecting the industry.

UNDP deputy resident representative Chika Charles Aniekwe said Malawi has abundant creative talent and the priority should be to turn that potential into sustainable businesses and economic opportunities.

“By strengthening skills, protecting intellectual property and expanding markets, we can reposition Malawi’s creative economy,” he said.

On his part, Standard Bank chief finance and value management officer John Mhone, whose institution injected K300 million towards the forum, said the bank was committed to supporting young people to unearth opportunities.

“We want to be part of the journey of our youths creating opportunities for themselves through the arts,” he said.

Fashion Association if Malawi deputy president Xandria welcomed the intervention, saying it will provide an opportunity for artists to push for solutions to challenges affecting the creative industry.
