South Africa has once again crossed the one-million mark for international tourist arrivals in a single month, with 1,005,286 visitors recorded in August 2026, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The latest figures show a 7.4% increase compared with August 2025, adding to what has been a strong year for the country’s tourism sector.
For Cape Town, which remains one of South Africa’s major tourism destinations, the continued growth points to sustained international interest in the country’s attractions, experiences and hospitality offering.
Between January and August 2026, South Africa recorded 7,581,455 international tourist arrivals.
That is an 11.7% increase compared with the same period in 2025, showing that the August milestone is part of a broader upward trend rather than a once-off spike.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the latest figures also highlight the need to turn growing visitor numbers into wider economic opportunities.
‘Welcoming more than one million international tourists in August demonstrates the demand that exists for South Africa,’ de Lille said.
She added that the focus should now be on giving visitors more destinations to explore, experiences to enjoy and reasons to extend their stays, while ensuring that tourism benefits reach more communities.
The United States remained South Africa’s largest overseas source market in August, contributing 37,134 tourists.
It was followed by the United Kingdom with 25,749 visitors, while Germany recorded 14,731 arrivals.
The figures are also significant in the context of South Africa’s performance across the continent.
According to UN Tourism, South Africa was the strongest-performing African destination during the first half of 2026, recording 12% growth in international tourist arrivals compared with the same period in 2025.
The organisation also placed South Africa among the 20 best-performing destinations globally among destinations that reported data for the first half of the year.
The growing numbers are putting renewed attention on the need to expand South Africa’s tourism infrastructure and experiences.
This week’s South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit (SATIS) is bringing government, investors and tourism stakeholders together to explore ways of turning rising demand into new and expanded tourism products, experiences and infrastructure.
