LDEA Officer Arrested Over Alleged Drug Possession

An officer of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) is currently in custody following his arrest for the alleged illegal possession of narcotic substances.

The officer, identified as 44-year-old Kolubah Coleman, was assigned to the LDEA’s Maryland County Detachment. According to statement details from the Agency, Coleman was intercepted by officers from the Grand Gedeh County Detachment during an intelligence-led search of a maroon pickup truck bearing license plate A53809.

The search reportedly uncovered 26 boxes of Tramadol valued at approximately LRD 520,000 (US$2,786.64) alongside 8.23 kilograms of suspected Kush valued at LRD 31,274 (US$164.60).

Following a preliminary investigation, Coleman was formally charged with the illegal possession of narcotics and forwarded to the local court for prosecution. In accordance with Liberian law, these allegations remain subject to judicial determination, and the officer maintains the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in a court of law.

The arrest has raised serious questions regarding internal oversight and accountability within the nation’s primary drug enforcement body. The apprehension of an officer tasked with suppressing illicit narcotics underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining integrity and professional standards within state security agencies.

For many citizens concerned by the widespread proliferation of illicit substances across the country, the case places renewed focus on public trust in law enforcement institutions. When an officer entrusted with upholding drug laws is implicated in their violation, the public naturally demands rigorous oversight, comprehensive investigations, and complete transparency.

At the same time, authorities note that the arrest of an individual officer does not automatically prove wider institutional involvement or the existence of a syndicate. Establishing whether the seized substances were intended for distribution, personal use, or transport requires thorough evidentiary review through ongoing judicial proceedings.

In response to the incident, the LDEA reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding drug-related offenses, maintaining that no individual is above the law regardless of rank, position, or official standing. The Agency emphasized its dedication to impartial law enforcement and internal discipline.

Observers note, however, that public confidence hinges on operational accountability and tangible outcomes. Key questions remain as to whether investigators will identify the origin and destination of the confiscated substances, as well as any potential accomplices involved in the transit.

The case serves as a critical test of the LDEA’s commitment to equal law enforcement. Ensuring a transparent court process, presenting verifiable evidence, and taking appropriate action where guilt is established remain essential to preserving public confidence in Liberia’s broader anti-narcotics campaign.
