MP Zaheer Jhanda Spark Mixed Reactions After Giving Away Kshs 50K to Fans at Obinna Show

Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Zaheer Jhanda has attracted public attention after reportedly giving away KSh50,000 to fans during his appearance on the popular show hosted by Kenyan media personality Oga Obinna.

The gesture has triggered mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some praising the legislator for his generosity while others question whether cash handouts are the best way for politicians to support ordinary citizens.

The incident has reignited conversations about the role of elected leaders in helping people cope with the rising cost of living, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.

For supporters, Jhanda’s reported giveaway demonstrates a willingness to share his resources with members of the public. They argue that direct financial assistance can provide immediate relief to individuals facing economic difficulties.

However, critics believe political leaders should place greater emphasis on long-term solutions, including job creation, improved public services, business opportunities and economic empowerment programmes.

The debate also highlights how entertainment platforms have increasingly become spaces where politicians interact with the public beyond traditional political rallies and official functions.

Jhanda has previously spoken about supporting people who attend his political engagements, maintaining that he uses his salary and business earnings to assist them with expenses.

His latest reported gesture on the Obinna Show has consequently renewed interest in his approach to public engagement and financial assistance.

Nevertheless, cash giveaways remain a contentious issue in Kenyan politics, with questions frequently raised about whether such gestures reflect personal generosity or contribute to a political culture that places excessive emphasis on immediate financial rewards.

With political alignments and campaign strategies expected to gain momentum ahead of the 2027 polls, incidents involving politicians and public handouts are likely to attract further scrutiny.

The KSh50,000 giveaway has therefore become part of a wider conversation about leadership, generosity and the expectations Kenyans have of their elected representatives.
