SASSA vs Namibia social grants: How much do pensioners and children get?

South Africa and Namibia both have extensive social protection systems, but the monthly payments available to beneficiaries differ significantly.

With millions of South Africans relying on SASSA grants every month, how does the country’s social assistance system compare with that of its neighbouring country?

Here is what beneficiaries receive in the two countries in 2026.

SASSA grants increased in 2026

South Africa’s social grants increased from April 2026 as part of the government’s 2026/27 budget.

The Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant increased to R2 400 per month.

The War Veterans Grant increased to R2 420, while the Foster Child Grant rose to R1 290.

The Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid both increased to R580 per month.

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant remains at R370 per month.

The government allocated R292.8 billion towards social grants for the 2026/27 financial year, with about 26.5 million beneficiaries receiving social assistance.

Namibia’s pension is lower

Namibia’s old-age grant currently stands at N$1 700 per month.

The payment was increased by N$100 from April 2026, taking it from N$1 600 to N$1 700.

Because the Namibian dollar is pegged to the South African rand at a one-to-one rate, the amounts can be compared directly in rand terms.

This means Namibia’s old-age grant is equivalent to about R1 700, compared with South Africa’s R2 400 Older Persons Grant.

Namibia’s old-age grant is available to residents aged 60 and above and is described by the country’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare as a monthly unconditional allowance.

Disability grants also differ

South Africa’s Disability Grant is currently R2 400 per month, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements and means testing.

Namibia’s disability grant is N$1 700 per month, according to recent reporting on the country’s social grant system.

Namibia’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare says the disability grant is available to people aged 16 to 59 who have been medically diagnosed as temporarily or permanently disabled.

What about children?

South Africa’s Child Support Grant is R580 per month per child in the 2026/27 financial year.

Namibia’s Vulnerable Children Grant is N$350 per beneficiary per month.

Namibia also has other forms of assistance for children, including maintenance, foster-care and disability-related grants.

A major difference in how grants are assessed

One of the biggest differences between the two systems is how eligibility is determined.

In South Africa, most SASSA grants are subject to a means test, which considers an applicant’s income and assets.

SASSA says the means test is designed to determine whether an applicant has sufficient means to support themselves.

Namibia’s old-age grant, meanwhile, is structured as an unconditional monthly allowance for qualifying residents aged 60 and above.

This means the two countries use different approaches when determining access to some forms of social assistance.
