Reckless Speeding Claims Another Life On Keffi-Abuja Road, Residents Demand Speed Breakers

Another fatal accident has occurred along the Keffi-Abuja highway, with a young woman operating a Point of Sale (PoS) business reportedly crushed to death by a speeding vehicle at Orozo Junction in the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident occurred at about 3pm on Thursday along the Orozo-Pianko road corridor, near Living Faith Church, Orozo Junction.

The development has renewed concerns among residents over alleged reckless driving and speeding on the newly opened Keffi-Abuja highway, particularly along the Orozo, Karshi and Pianko axis.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the victim was attending to customers at her PoS stand when the vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, veered off the road and struck her.

The woman was said to have been in the company of her fiancé at the time of the incident.

Some eyewitnesses alleged that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol. However, the claim could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

The FCT Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The latest death has triggered fresh outrage among residents, who said the road had recorded several fatal accidents since it became increasingly used by motorists following ongoing road construction works on the Nyanya-Keffi corridor.

A community leader in Orozo, who witnessed the evacuation of the victim, described the situation as alarming.

“This road has become a death trap. We have lost too many young people. Government must act now,” he said.

Residents are now calling on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene by approving the installation of speed breakers and other traffic-calming measures along built-up sections of the highway.

They specifically appealed for safety measures around Orozo Junction, the Living Faith axis and other busy market and residential areas.

According to the residents, the installation of speed limit signs, pedestrian crossings and speed breakers would help reduce the risk to pedestrians and other road users.

They expressed concern that without urgent safety interventions, the benefits of the new road would continue to be overshadowed by avoidable loss of lives.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for comments were ongoing.
