Former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Ganduje has paid a congratulatory visit to former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha following a court judgment declaring him the party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
Mr Ganduje visited Mr Okorocha at his Abuja residence on Thursday, hours after the Federal High Court ruled against Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma in the dispute over the senatorial ticket.
Speaking during the visit, Ganduje expressed satisfaction with the judgment, describing it as a victory for the former governor.
“I was excited when I heard the judgment. It is a well-deserved victory and a vindication of your struggle,” he told Okorocha.
Okorocha thanked Ganduje for the visit, describing him as a friend and brother who had supported him during difficult times.
Earlier on Thursday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the APC candidate for the Imo West senatorial election scheduled for January 16, 2027.
The judge ruled that evidence presented before the court showed that Okorocha won the party’s primary election held on May 18, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Justice Egwuatu subsequently directed the APC to forward Okorocha’s name to INEC and ordered the electoral commission to recognise him as the party’s candidate.
The judgment followed a suit filed by Okorocha challenging Uzodimma’s nomination.
Reacting to the ruling, the former governor said justice had prevailed and thanked the judiciary for its decision.
However, the Imo State Government rejected the judgment and announced plans to challenge it at the Court of Appeal.
In a statement, Commissioner for Information Declan Emelumba described the ruling as a miscarriage of justice, arguing that the court failed to consider relevant legal provisions and previous Supreme Court decisions.
The Imo State chapter of the APC also maintained that Uzodimma remained its candidate for the senatorial election.
In a statement issued by its publicity secretary Onwuasoanya Jones, the party said Uzodimma won the primary with the support of its members.
The party added that its legal department would study the judgment and determine its next course of action.
Okorocha governed Imo State from 2011 to 2019 and represented Imo West in the Senate from 2019 to 2023.
Uzodimma, who previously represented the district in the Senate, became governor in January 2020 and is serving his second term.
