Only 17 forensic beds at Valkenberg as accused face lengthy assessment delays

Valkenberg Hospital has 17 approved forensic observation beds, leaving 416 accused people awaiting court-ordered psychiatric assessments — including 55 facing serious violent charges who may wait up to two years, the Western Cape health department says.
