**DAR ES SALAAM: **TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has uncovered cases of electricity theft in Visiwani, Mwananyamala and Mivumoni areas in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, during an ongoing operation to inspect electricity meters and power infrastructure.
The operation aims to identify illegal electricity connections, assess the condition and performance of power infrastructure and ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply to customers.
Speaking during inspection conducted on Wednesday at Visiwani, TANESCO Kinondoni North Regional Engineer, Underson Manyika said the inspection team had discovered cases where customers diverted electricity connections, resulting in meters failing to accurately record actual power consumption.
“Our inspection has revealed illegal connections that were affecting the accuracy of electricity meters,” he said.
He added: “We visited a bar during the inspection and found that although the customer had electricity, the meter was showing zero units. Upon further inspection, we discovered that part of the electricity connection had been diverted, enabling the customer to consume electricity without paying for it.”
He said such practices constitute electricity theft and result in revenue losses to the utility, while also compromising the safety and reliability of electricity services. TANESCO Security Officer, Ms Lilian Nizim, urged members of the public to comply with laws and regulations governing electricity use and refrain from tampering with electricity meters or interfering with power connections.
“When a customer identifies a problem with their meter, they should report it to TANESCO for appropriate action. Members of the public should refrain from interfering with electricity meters because such acts are unlawful and can endanger lives and property,” she said.
She said appropriate legal measures were being taken against individuals found involved in electricity theft and other illegal practices. Ms Nizim further urged the public to cooperate with TANESCO by reporting cases of electricity theft and other unlawful activities to enable the utility to take timely action.
