GAUTENG – A wanted Carletonville illegal mining kingpin was shot and killed on Sunday following an intelligence-driven operation by the National Intervention Unit (NIU) in Gauteng. The tactical strike forms part of broader, ongoing law enforcement efforts to dismantle violent criminal syndicates and disrupt illicit activities in the region.
According to an NIU spokesperson, members of the Pretoria-based tactical unit traced the highly sought-after suspect to a local residence. Upon arriving at the property, the operatives announced their presence and clearly identified themselves as police officers.
The situation escalated when the suspect responded by pointing an AK-47 assault rifle directly at the officers. Faced with an imminent threat to their lives, the NIU members were compelled to respond with force, resulting in the suspect sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.
Following the shootout, police secured the scene and seized an AK-47 rifle along with 125 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
An NIU spokesperson confirmed that the deceased was widely known to law enforcement as a dangerous and prominent figure in the local underground mining sector. The suspect is believed to have played a central and violent role in the ongoing, bloody conflict between two rival illegal mining groups operating within the Carletonville area.
A SAPS spokesperson highlighted that this successful tracing operation is a direct result of continuous intelligence gathering aimed at neutralizing high-level syndicate leaders.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that it will continue to intensify its operations. The strategic focus remains on dismantling illegal mining networks, disrupting the logistical activities of criminal syndicates, and ultimately restoring law, order, and safety to communities heavily affected by illegal mining and its associated violence.
