Tobacco revenue drops by 47% to $286.7 million

Earnings from tobacco, Malawi’s top export crop, declined by 47.1 percent to $286.7 million at

the close of the 2026 marketing season, with farmers facing increased pressure from lower prices amid rising production costs. According to statistics published by AHL Tobacco Sales Limited on Wednesday, the earnings declined from $542.3 million recorded during the 2025 season, representing a drop of $255.6 million (K447.6 billion).
