London City Lionesses delivered a dominant away performance on Sunday, beating Tottenham 6-1 at BetWright Stadium as Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani each scored twice.
Putellas, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner and four-time Women’s Champions League champion with Barcelona, claimed her first WSL brace since joining from Spain in the summer. Having scored her first league goal in last week’s 2-0 win over Brighton, she opened the scoring after only three minutes. Lize Kop kept out Grace Geyoro’s attempt, but Putellas reacted quickest and finished the rebound with her left foot.
Diani made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, converting after a sharp move involving Freya Godfrey and Lucia Corrales. Putellas then added her second and London City’s third in the 34th minute, firing into the roof of the net after Danielle van de Donk reached the byeline on the left and cut the ball back.
Tottenham’s best moment before the break came through Julie Blakstad’s 25-yard left-footed free-kick, which Elene Lete did well to push onto the crossbar.
Van de Donk scored London City’s fourth in the 52nd minute, turning in Diani’s low cross from the right at the near post. Tottenham hit back immediately when Victoria Pelova, a summer signing from Arsenal, controlled Blakstad’s cross and finished well for her fifth WSL goal of the season.
London City restored their four-goal advantage when Diani charged down Kop’s clearance and walked the ball into an empty net. In stoppage time, substitute Delphine Cascarino completed the scoring with a fine solo goal, running at the Tottenham defence, using a stepover to make space and firing past Kop.
The defeat ended Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the Women’s Super League campaign and sealed an emphatic victory for London City Lionesses.
