<div class="text-long"><p>WASHINGTON - Ride-hailing giant Uber is cutting around 10 percent of its global workforce as part of a major organisational restructuring, while also shutting down its operations in Nigeria and Uganda.</p><p>Uber announced the departures from the two African markets on Wednesday, after exiting Tanzania earlier this year.</p><p>The company’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, told employees that Uber would be reducing the size of its workforce by about 10 percent as part of efforts to make the business “simpler and faster”.</p><p>Uber has roughly 34,000 employees globally, with operations in more than 70 countries, according to a recent SEC filing.</p><blockquote><p><strong>READ: </strong><a style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgba(5, 80, 230, 0.05);color:rgb(5, 80, 230);font-family:Ginter, Inter, "Helvetica Neue", BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, sans-serif;font-size:16px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;orphans:2;overflow-wrap:break-word;text-align:start;text-decoration:none;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;" href="https://www.enca.com/business/prosus-sell-delivery-hero-stake-uber" hreflang="en"><strong>Prosus to sell Delivery Hero stake to Uber</strong></a></p></blockquote><p>The company said the restructuring was aimed at reducing coordination delays and creating a leaner organisation with clearer ownership and faster decision-making.</p><p>“A leaner organisation will mean clearer ownership, faster decisions, and more time spent building rather than coordinating,” Khosrowshahi said.</p><p>Founded in 2009, Uber transformed urban transportation by allowing people to use their own vehicles to provide rides to passengers. Only about 1 percent of employees will be allowed to work remotely going forward.</p><p>Wedbush Securities estimates the layoffs could save Uber around $1.75 billion, which the company could redirect towards growth areas.</p><p>Uber shares, listed in the US, were up more than 2.5 eprcent in midday trading.</p></div>
