A Patriot in a Nation of Nationalists: The Legacy of Teklenkiel Gebru

Eritrea’s political crisis has always been inseparable from its intellectual and moral crisis. A society that loses its culture of reason, inquiry, critical thinking, and the relentless pursuit of truth inevitably drifts toward degradation, stagnation, and, in time, a slow weathering away.

These habits of mind rest on something foundational: that truth exists, that right and wrong exist, and that they matter. When these are compromised, every other virtue loses momentum. As our elders remind us, ሓቂ ንዘልኣለም ስንቂ—truth is sustenance for eternity. ሓሶት ድራር ሓንቲ ምሸት—falsehood is nourishment for only one evening.

There is an even deeper implication: only a free person can be moral, because morality cannot be exercised without choice. Compulsion may produce obedience, but it cannot produce virtue. This is why the love of freedom, and the love of truth cannot be separated; neither can flourish without the other. When people lose the courage to defend them, dictatorship ceases to be an aberration and becomes the norm.

Freedom and democracy, even under the best conditions, remain vulnerable to demagoguery and populism. Bertrand Russell captured this dynamic with chilling precision in his 1940 essay Freedom and Government: “First they fascinate the fools, then they muzzle the intelligent.” Eritrea’s modern history has seen more than enough fascination—and no shortage of muzzling.

Yet amid this climate, the legendary artist Teklenkiel Gebru, affectionately known as Wedi Gebru, stood apart. He was a unicorn, a maverick, a patriot in a nation crowded with nationalists. A man who spoke truth to power—not out of defiance for its own sake, but out of fidelity to principle. In a landscape where conformity was rewarded and silence was expected, he insisted on being free, and in doing so, insisted on being moral.

Nationalism as a Secular Religion

Much of this fascination has emanated from the most defining “ism” of the modern era: nationalism. In Eritrea, nationalism has evolved into a kind of secular religion, complete with its own doctrines, hymns, catechism, martyrs, saints, angels, evangelists, apologists—and, as with every religion, its own apostates, heretics, pagans, and demons.

It mirrors the familiar theological logic that one cannot affirm the authority of God without denying the authority of the devil; so too in Eritrea, one cannot support the regime without denouncing the opposition, nor support the EPLF without denouncing the ELF—and vice versa. The demand for ideological purity has long overshadowed the possibility of principled disagreement.

This reflex is reinforced by the religious imagination itself. *ክርስቶስ **ተንሥኣ **እሙታን፡ **በዓቢይ **ኃይል **ወሥልጣን። **አሰሮ *ለሰይጣን—Christ is risen from the dead with great power and authority; He bound Satan. And in Islam, the believer seeks refuge from the accursed one: *أَعُوذُ **بِاللَّهِ **مِنَ **الشَّيْطَانِ *الرَّجِيمِ. Across traditions, the moral universe is structured around a binary: allegiance to the sacred requires repudiation of the profane.

Eritrean political culture has absorbed this logic almost too well. Loyalty is measured not by what one affirms but by whom one condemns. To belong, one must excommunicate. To dissent, one must be demonized. The theological binary becomes a political instrument, turning disagreement into heresy and opponents into embodiments of the devil.

In this worldview, homogeneity becomes a virtue and diversity a threat. Conformity is rewarded; deviation is punished. And when conformity becomes the highest civic value, excommunication becomes the default political tool.

The ghosts of the early 1950s—those who weaponized excommunication against Eritreans who opposed union with Ethiopia—are still with us. The same reflex to brand dissenters as traitors, apostates, or enemies of the nation has endured across generations. It resurfaced with brutal clarity after September 18, 2001, when the regime of Isaias Afwerki arrested some of the most important leaders and founders of the EPLF and denounced them as traitors, sub‑nationalists, CIA operatives, and Weyane colluders—men accused of endangering the security and survival of the very nation they had helped liberate.

The Qeshi Demetros of yesterday returned in new forms, embodied in figures like Yemane Monkey and Hagos Kisha, who revived the old tradition of policing thought, manufacturing heresy, and branding patriots as enemies of the state.

Just as it is now, as it was them, a few individuals stood tall. As the saying goes, like father, like son: Aboy Gebru, Teklenkiel Gebru’s father, was denounced as “RabiTa” for his pro‑independence stand in his own village, a label crafted to isolate and delegitimize him.

“RabiTa” was a catch‑all slur in the region, hurled at anyone who defied conformity or challenged the imposed political orthodoxy. Aboy Grazmach Kahsu of Weki Duba, a staunch advocate of independence, was subjected to the same branding. In those years, principled dissent was not merely discouraged, it was pathologized. The late aboy Haile of Atlanta, Kahsu’s son, was another. A regular contributor to the newspapers of the time, he even ran for office representing the Deqeteshim region, and for his outspoken views he too was marked with the same label.

Truly, **እሾኽ ****ብበላሓ **ትውለድ—a thorn is born prickly. Wedi Gebru carried that inheritance with unmistakable clarity. He used his prickly words to poke the powers that be, refusing the silence that conformity demanded. In a political culture that punished dissent, he insisted on speaking truth, even when truth was unwelcome.

Wedi Gebru was among the earliest artists who devoted their craft to Eritrea’s independence and unity. In one of his sharpest lines, he sings: **ኣንቲ ****ሰማያዊት ****ኣብ ****ደገ ****ሓዲርኪ ****ከም **ኣራዊት Ah, you blue one, you spent your night outside like a wild beast.

He follows this by addressing the Eritrean Muslims who pioneered the armed struggle under the blue flag banner: **ኣንታ ****ወዲ ****ዓደም ****በዓል **ዕማየ You, son of Adam, with your turban; **እንተረኺብካያ ****ስገማየ ****ነጊራትንያ **ጸገማየ If you find my barley, she told me her troubles.

This pattern reveals something essential about Eritrean political culture: when nationalism becomes a religion, excommunication becomes its sacrament. And those who insist on principle over conformity inevitably pay the price.

The cloud of obedience has enveloped the entire country. In such a climate, the individual’s freedom to think independently, to dissent, or even to question the prevailing worldview becomes nearly impossible. When people surrender their judgment to collectivist enterprises, their capacity to inflict harm on others rises dramatically. Eritrea offers a stark illustration of this truth: once conformity becomes a civic virtue, coercion becomes a political method, and the individual is swallowed by the demands of the collective.

Nationalists and One Patriot

Eritrea has produced many nationalist artists—men and women who served the national cause with unblemished dedication. Their contributions are undeniable. But very few elevated themselves from nationalism to patriotism, and the distinction is crucial.

Wedi Gebru was one of the rare exceptions: a patriot who spoke truth to power and placed principles above organizational loyalty. His commitment was not to factions or slogans, but to the moral foundations that give a national struggle its legitimacy.

The contrast is instructive. Just as Eritrea’s political leadership has struggled to evolve from revolutionary activism to statesmanship, many artists remained confined within the emotional and ideological boundaries of nationalism. After thirty‑five years in power, the country’s leader still operates within a Cold War mindset—rigid, suspicious, and shaped by conflict rather than governance. That intellectual stagnation has contributed significantly to the nation’s misery.

Patriotism demands a higher loyalty: not to slogans or historical grudges, but to principles. A patriot does not serve leaders; he serves truth. He does not protect institutions; he protects the ideals those institutions are meant to embody. A patriot criticizes not because he hates his country, but because he loves it too much to lie about it.

This is why Wedi Gebru stands apart. He was as nationalist as any of his contemporaries—his record of service is unparalleled—but he was also something rarer: a principled patriot. His loyalty was to truth, justice, unity, and the moral integrity of the Eritrean struggle.

Authenticity Without Performance

Born and raised in OnalaAlay (Dembezan, Hamasien, or in its current designation, Zoba Maekel), Wedi Gebru embodied the authenticity of Eritrean culture. He became cosmopolitan without ever forfeiting his country‑boy heritage. He traveled widely, lived on four continents, and absorbed global experiences without pretending to be anything other than what he was. There was no feigned sophistication, no performance of modernity. He was comfortable in his own skin—rooted in his culture, his history, and his people.

More importantly, he understood the moral role of an artist. In one interview, he said: “An artist has to see beyond the horizon; he has to know what inside people’s hearts and minds is, because it is important that the artist knows he is for the people and from the people.”

That single statement reveals his artistic philosophy: the artist as seer, conscience, and vessel of collective truth.

His childhood friend summarized him perfectly: “Wedi Gebru was a critic, not an adulator—ነቓፋይ እምበር ወዳሳይ ኣይነበረን.”

Very few Eritrean artists dared to critique, to question, or to hold the struggle accountable to its ideals. Wedi Gebru did—from the beginning.

The Artist Who Dismantled Partisanship

He exposed the futility of factionalism through simple, disarming lyrics such as:

“ሃሪ ማዕተበይ ዓሸየ እምበር ኩሉኹም ሰበይ” My silky neck chain—symbol of faith—if I were not a fool, I would have known that you are all my kith and kin.

In a single line, he dismantles factionalism and reminds listeners that identity and belonging run deeper than political camps.

A Consistent Moral Voice Across Decades

Over the past weeks, I listened to dozens of his songs—old and new—transcribing and translating many of his lyrics. What emerges is unmistakable: a consistent artistic identity. Wedi Gebru did not change; he deepened. The young artist and the older artist share the same core—a critic, a truth‑teller, a thinker, and an artist who composed his own lyrics, and a patriot whose loyalty was anchored in principles rather than institutions.

Early Critiques: Asmera and Sembele

His early music already carried unmistakable historical and political weight. As a student of Wedi Zagrayit, he inherited a tradition of lyrical courage and history telling; if you appreciate the mentor, you inevitably admire the protégé. From the outset, he portrayed Asmera as a city where Eritreans lived as strangers in their own capital—dominated by Italians, Yemenis, Greeks, Armenians, Jews, and Indians, many of whom enjoyed privileges systematically denied to the native population.

He lamented Sembele, a village whose dignity had been compromised by outsiders:

ወየ ሰምበሊ ዛዓባይ ጎልጎሊ Oh Sembele, the great plain—

ኣቲ ዓዲ ቀሺ ዓጣን ደብሪ the village of priests, the incense‑burning monastery.

ዓዲ ስርናይ ዓዲ እኽሊ A village of wheat, a village of crops—

መጽዓን ኰንኪ ደሞ ክትጥቕለሊ you cannot be like a crupper and fold.

ዓዲ ጋዞ ተሳዓሪ A village of warriors, never meant to be defeated.

ወዲ ዓዲ ገዲፍኪ ንጀበሊ You chose, from the village’s children, Jebeli.

ከይደሊኪ የ ሎሚ ደሓን ዓሊ Today I leave you and bid you farewell;

ምስቶም ደለውኺ ጥራሕ ተማሰሊ Try to get along with those who remain behind.

ጓና ሕራይ ወዲ ዓዲ እምብለይ ካብ በልኪ If you said yes to the stranger and no to your own son.

This was not nostalgia; it was social critique—an interrogation of cultural erosion and political acquiescence. The theme of Asmera preferring strangers over her own children appears in the work of Eritrea’s greatest artist, Yemane Barya, as well. In *“**ሓቛፊት **ንጓኖት **ዘይጠርናፊት *ንደቃ,” Asmera embraces outsiders yet fails to gather her own. Yemane goes even further, turning his critique toward the Eritrean who imitates this pattern: *“**ዕሽነት **ኣጥቂዕዎ **ዘይለበመ **ጌና **ንሓው **ገዲፉ **ዝሓቁፍ **ወዲ *ጓና.” Afflicted by foolishness and still unwise, he abandons his own brother to embrace a stranger.

Colonial Humiliation and the Theft of Dignity

Under Mussolini’s racial policies, Eritreans were forbidden from walking in Kombishtato, today’s Godena harenet, unless they removed their shoes. They were barred from riding bicycles or asserting even the smallest gesture of dignity. Humiliation was the daily order of things.

Wedi Gebru distilled this into a stark line:

ኮምቪሽታቶ ሽግለታይ ከሊኦሙኒ — In Kombishtato, they would not allow me to use my bicycle.

ወይ ሞሰሊኒ ካብዚ ዶ ከፊእኒ — Oh Mussolini, this is not worse than what you have done to me.

He understood intuitively that the insult of removing one’s shoes, or the prohibition against the use of bicycles, was nothing compared to the injury of losing one’s land. In the highlands of Eritrea, land is not a real‑estate commodity that can be exchanged at will; it is a source of sovereignty, citizenship, and belonging. It is for this reason people used to say, *ንርስቲ **ይዋጋኣላ *ኣንስቲ—for the land, even women fight.

The Wars of Hamasien: Weki Duba

In one of his historical songs, he recounts the wars that devastated Hamasien—particularly the conflict between Teazega and Hazega, culminating in the 1878 battle of Weki Duba where Ras Woldemicael Solomon (Gomida) killed Ras Hailu (Hailu Habal).

He warned that war was inevitable and death was approaching. To those who did not grasp its cruelty, he urged them to consult the people of Weki Duba—who had witnessed men and women dying side by side, as Hamasien’s legend holds.

ኣቱም ካርነሽም ክተቱ Oh you from Karinishem, gird your loins.

ኣቱም ድምቤዛን ክተቱ Oh you from Demb’eza, gird your loins.

እንተዘይ ከተትኩም ትመቱ If you do not gird your loins, death will find you.

መጺእና ኣሎ ደም ብሽንቱ Blood will flow freely, like spilled water.

ንወክድባ ሕተቱ Consult with the people of Weki Duba.

ሰብኣይን ሰበይትን እዮም ዝመቱ Men and women alike will surely fall.

His lyrics capture the hierarchy of suffering with remarkable precision: everyday humiliations were intolerable, but they paled in comparison to the theft of a people’s world.
