The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State council, has called for an urgent investigation into an alleged attack and arrest involving the Chairman of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in Edo State, Comrade Williams Uwumarogie, and some members of the union.
In a press statement dated October 23, 2026, and signed by Prof. Monday Igbafen, Chairman of the Edo State NLC Caretaker Committee, the Congress expressed concern over the reported incident, which allegedly occurred late on Thursday, October 22, amid an ongoing protest and strike by electricity workers over unresolved labour and welfare issues.
According to the statement, Uwumarogie and some other union members sustained injuries during the incident and are reportedly receiving medical attention.
The NLC described the development as a matter of serious concern, stressing the importance of protecting workers’ rights to peaceful protest and lawful industrial action.
The Congress urged the Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, to order a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the involvement of any individuals or security personnel.
It also called for appropriate legal action against anyone found culpable, in accordance with the law.
The statement further noted that video footage reportedly circulating on social media could assist investigators in establishing what transpired.
The Congress urged the relevant authorities to examine available evidence and ensure that the investigation is conducted transparently.
Beyond the reported incident, the Edo State NLC expressed concern about the continuing industrial dispute involving electricity workers and the wider challenges surrounding labour representation in the state.
The Congress emphasised the need for constructive engagement among the government, employers and recognised labour organisations to address workers’ grievances and prevent further escalation of industrial tensions.
It also urged the state government to engage duly recognised representatives of organised labour when addressing issues affecting workers, noting that clear channels of communication and legitimate representation are essential to resolving industrial disputes.
The NLC expressed hope that the state government would take prompt steps to address the situation, protect the rights of workers and promote peaceful resolution of the ongoing dispute.
The statement reaffirmed the importance of dialogue, respect for the rule of law and accountability in maintaining industrial harmony in Edo State.
The Congress called on all parties involved to exercise restraint while the relevant authorities investigate the incident and work towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
