For 37 Years, Joe’s Electricals has been wiring the nation – and its future

When the sun sets over the Kalahari, the lights that flicker on in villages across Botswana tell a story that began, in many cases, with a single company and a stubborn belief that every community, no matter how remote, deserves to be connected.

Joe’s Electrical Contractors, founded in 1989 in a modest industrial plot in Tlokweng, is marking its 37th year of operation this month; a milestone that reads less like a corporate anniversary and more like a chronicle of a nation’s push to bring power, communication, and opportunity to its people.

The company is 100 percent citizen-owned, a detail its leadership returns to again and again, not as a marketing slogan but as the reason it exists. “We have been dealing with different communities, trying to improve their lives,” the company states in its corporate social responsibility charter. In Botswana, where vast distances separate settlements and infrastructure gaps remain acute, that sentence carries the weight of actual transformer installations, of kilometers of power line strung across savanna and scrub.

Sixteen villages, one transformative mission

Consider the numbers. Joe’s Electrical has been part of the electrification of 100 villages across Botswana; and personally delivered power to 16 of them, stringing more than 16,000 kilowatts of electrical line in the process. The roster reads like a geography lesson in the country’s remote interior: Mothabaneng, Mabule, Dibete, Motshegaletau, Leshibitse, Malatswai, Mokobaxane, Ikoga, Nxamasere, Samane, Hatsalatladi, Tshimoyapula, Makunda, Lokgwabe, and Makakung.

Each name represents more than an engineering project. In Malatswai, the company installed a 70-kilometer, 33-kilowatt line and a substation ; infrastructure that turned a settlement without reliable power into one that could run schools, clinics, and small businesses after dark. In Leshibitse, 60 kilometers of 11-kilovolt line brought the same transformation. In Dibete, 40 kilometers of line and full village electrification followed. These are not ribbon-cutting ceremonies quickly forgotten. They are permanent changes in the rhythm of daily life.

Wiring schools, building futures

Electricity, for Joe’s Electrical, has never been only about households. The company has wired entire packages of junior secondary schools; the Combined Junior Secondary Schools, or CJSS, that serve as educational stepping stones for rural Botswana. Package 1 alone covered seven schools: Tshesebe, Mbalambi, Pandagala, Moses Mengwe, Goshwe, Goldmine, and Tsamaya. Others – Shakawe, Motswasele, Meselewapula, Pitsane-Molopo – followed.

Primary schools got the same treatment under the government’s eradication program, which targets the country’s most underserved campuses. Joe’s Electrical handled three packages of primary school electrification – spanning communities from Mabutsane and Morwamosu to Kang, Khakhea, Itholoke, Khonkhwa, Sekoma, Mmea, and Mokubilo, as well as Mathangwane, Nshakashokwe, Nswaswi, and Matobo.

The message is simple: a school without electricity is a school without a future. Joe’s Electrical has made sure dozens of them will not face that limitation.

Towers on the horizon

In recent years, the company has evolved beyond copper wire and circuit breakers. Under its trading name, Joe’s Telecomms, it has moved into telecommunications infrastructure; an expansion driven by the same conviction that connection is a right, not a luxury.

The company constructed twelve telecommunications towers for the Botswana Police Service, a project that stitched together national security communications across the country’s vast territory. It designed and built its own tower infrastructure in Tlokweng. And it is currently contracted by Mascom Wireless to acquire, develop, and construct ten new towers as part of the mobile carrier’s network expansion.

It is a strategic pivot that makes instinctive sense: if a company can run 70 kilometers of power line across open bush, it can anchor a steel tower in the same soil.

Eighty jobs, and the ripples that follow

A company that has operated for nearly four decades in a developing economy leaves footprints beyond its project list. Joe’s Electrical has created 80 direct jobs; positions filled by electricians, engineers, project managers, civil works crews, and administrative staff who earn salaries that circulate back through families and communities.

In Botswana, where youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge, 80 jobs is not a footnote. It is a fact that reshapes households. Each position represents school fees paid, groceries bought, siblings supported through education. The company’s headquarters alone; two owned offices with a combined storage and workspace exceeding 7,600 square meters in the Tlokweng Industrial Area; houses the machinery of this employment engine.

A social responsibility that runs deep

Joe’s Electrical does not treat corporate social responsibility as a department or a press release. Its CSR commitment is woven into the company’s operating philosophy: giving back to communities is described as a duty, not a discretionary gesture. The firm maintains a formal Safety, Health and Environment Management Plan, and its quality management system is audited annually against compliance standards – a discipline that reflects the stakes of the work itself.

In a sector where shortcuts can be fatal and substandard installations can undo years of progress, Joe’s Electrical has built its reputation on the opposite proposition: that every connection, whether a power line or a telecom tower, must be done right.

The company’s competitive strengths, as it describes them, read like a blueprint for a responsible contractor: proven tower construction experience, local Botswana market knowledge, compliance with telecommunications infrastructure standards, efficient stakeholder and regulatory engagement, and the capability to manage multi-site deployment projects simultaneously.

Building connections, strengthening Botswana

The company’s motto – “Building Connections. Strengthening Botswana.” – could easily be dismissed as corporate boilerplate. Spend time with the project list, though, and it acquires a harder, more literal meaning. Joe’s Electrical has laid the physical infrastructure; substations, overhead lines, towers, school wiring; that allows a nation to communicate across distances, to read after sundown, to call for help in an emergency.

Thirty-seven years after its founding, the company’s ambitions have grown beyond Botswana’s borders. It speaks now of thirsting for the international market, of expanding into transformer and switchgear oil purification, of becoming a leading telecommunications infrastructure company across the Southern African region.

But the foundation remains the same: a company that started with domestic installations and power distribution, that grew into village electrification and school wiring, that evolved into telecom tower construction; all the while keeping one fixed point of reference.

The lights are on. The towers are standing. Eighty people have work. And in villages scattered across the Botswana interior, the hum of electricity is the sound of a company that, after 37 years, is still building.
