The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected claims by President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the opposition is responsible for the hunger and economic hardship facing Nigerians, insisting the ruling party must take ownership of its record after more than a decade in power.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed (also referred to as Jungudo Haruna Mohammed), the PDP reacted to remarks by the APC Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, during an appearance on News Central’s Breakfast Show.
The party also referenced similar comments reportedly made by President Tinubu at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday, where he blamed the opposition for creating hunger and poverty while stating that his administration was working to eradicate them.
The PDP described the statements as attempts to evade responsibility and divert public attention from the challenges under the APC-led administration.“The PDP is not responsible for the hunger Nigerians are experiencing today. The APC must own its record, address the nation’s challenges, and deliver on its promises to Nigerians,” the statement said. The party urged the government to stop the “blame game” and focus on concrete solutions.
It challenged the APC to explain measures being taken to make food affordable, support farmers, strengthen local food production, create jobs, improve security, fight corruption, boost electricity supply, reduce transportation costs, and restore the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.“After more than APC’s 10 years in office, Nigerians deserve answers, not excuses,” Mohammed said.
“The government in power must answer for its stewardship and present a credible path towards economic recovery, food security, and a better standard of living for all Nigerians.”
While acknowledging that the Tinubu administration may have recorded some achievements, the PDP stressed that such recognition should not be seen as an endorsement of all its policies or acceptance of efforts to shift blame for current difficulties onto previous PDP-led governments (1999–2015). It maintained that every administration must be judged by its policies and the living conditions of the people.
