Sunderland vs Leeds: Preview, h2h as Okafor is in fitness doubt

Leeds United forward Noah Okafor, the Swiss-born son of a Nigerian father, is a fitness doubt for Sunday's trip to Sunderland, where Leeds have not won a top-flight match since 2002.

Match facts

Competition Premier League, Matchweek 8 Date Sunday 25 October 2026 Kick-off 17:30 WAT (16:30 GMT) Venue Stadium of Light, Sunderland Referee Stuart Attwell Standings Sunderland 20th (4 points), Leeds United 7th (10 points)

Form guide

Leeds are seventh with 10 points from seven games after a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Elland Road, where Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised after Bryan Mbeumo had scored for United. Four of their last six league games have ended in draws.

Sunderland are 20th with four points from seven. They have won once in the league, lost their last four league games, the latest a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, and drew with Lech Poznań in the Europa League in midweek.

Head-to-head

Across all meetings, Leeds have 41 wins to Sunderland's 36. Leeds' last top-flight win at the Stadium of Light came in 2002, the match in which 16-year-old James Milner became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Key battles

Calvert-Lewin has scored in six consecutive Premier League games and has five goals in all competitions, but a bruised foot makes him a doubt. Sunderland's Brian Brobbey, the club's top scorer with three, is expected back from a hamstring problem. Sunderland are without suspended defender Kevin Danso, who was sent off at Bournemouth, and Dan Ballard is injured.

The Nigerian connection

Okafor was born and raised in Binningen, Switzerland, with Igbo heritage through his father. He chose Switzerland over Nigeria, made his debut in 2019 and has 26 caps, and said on Instagram on 10 September that he would not play for Switzerland while Murat Yakin is head coach.

Leeds list Okafor, Anton Stach and Calvert-Lewin as doubts, and Joe Rodon is out. Okafor played in the 1-1 draw with United on 18 October, and a start at Sunderland depends on a late fitness call. Soccernet previewed that game in Leeds against Manchester United.

Analysis: a draw that suits the pattern

Leeds have drawn four of their last six league games, which suggests a side that is hard to beat but struggles to turn points into wins. Sunderland are the opposite: at home they cannot afford many more defeats if they want to leave the bottom three.

The injury lists point in the same direction. Leeds may be without their main striker, and Sunderland are missing two defenders, so the first goal could decide how cautious each side becomes. Leeds' record at this ground is 24 years old, which is a reminder that results here do not follow the table.

Verdict

Predicted score Sunderland 1-1 Leeds United Nigerian to watch Noah Okafor (Leeds United) Player to watch Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United) Deciding factor Whether Brobbey's return gives Sunderland more than Calvert-Lewin's scoring run gives Leeds

Leeds are the steadier side on form, but Sunderland at home and the 24-year gap at this ground argue against a Leeds win. With both teams carrying doubts up front, a draw is the likeliest result.
