Rudevit starts full-scale local fertiliser production

Rural Development Investment Initiative Trust (Rudevit) has started full-scale production of granulated organic fertiliser at its plant in Chileka, Blantyre, producing about 3 000 kilogrammes (kg) per hour.

The K2 billion facility currently operates one eight-hour shift and produces about 60 bags of 50 kg per hour.

The production milestone was highlighted on Thursday when NBM Development Bank board director Alick Sukasuka visited the facility to appreciate progress made since the subsidiary of Malawi Stock Exchange-listed National Bank of Malawi plc financed the establishment of the manufacturing plant in 2022.

He said the development bank is satisfied with the progress after it provided financing for the project.

“The progress at Rudevit has demonstrated the importance of supporting productive investments,” Sukasuka.

Rudevit board chairperson Hastings Bofomo Nyirenda said in an interview that the company’s production capacity will help to complement Malawi’s fertiliser requirements through locally produced organic fertiliser.

He said: “The facility can help to increase the availability of locally manufactured fertiliser while reducing reliance on imported products,” he said.

Bofomo Nyirenda said the company currently employs more than 60 people, with the manufacturing operation creating a market for the productive use of waste materials.

Agriculture expert Leonard Chimwaza said in an earlier interview that the production of organic fertiliser will improve access to affordable farm inputs and boost crop production.

Data from the Fertiliser Association of Malawi indicate that Malawi requires at least 450 000 metric tonnes of fertiliser annually.
