Absa Rewards Goes Beyond Cashback at Red Bull Unlocked Cape Town

Cape Town came alive on Saturday, 26 September, as Red Bull Unlocked brought together music, culture and nightlife for an immersive experience featuring more than 70 artists and DJs across genres including amapiano, hip-hop, Afro House and deep house.
But among the music, performances and energy of the night was another interesting story: how brands are beginning to rethink what customer rewards can actually look like.
Absa Rewards partnered with Red Bull to give customers access to the experience, with one winning customer and their friends receiving far more than tickets to the event. Their journey included flights to Cape Town, accommodation, transfers, VIP hospitality and access to Red Bull Unlocked, effectively turning a reward into an entire weekend experience.
I had an opportunity to speak to Duran Johnston, Senior Manager: Lifecycle Management at Absa Rewards, about why this distinction matters.
We often think about rewards programmes in fairly transactional terms: cashback, points or discounts. I asked Duran how an experience such as Red Bull Unlocked demonstrates the broader value that Absa Rewards can offer customers.
For Absa, the opportunity is to make rewards relevant to how customers actually live. Cashback remains an important part of the programme, but experiences create another layer of value — giving customers access to moments they may remember long after the transaction that earned the reward.
That thinking also explains why the Red Bull Unlocked prize was designed as a complete Cape Town experience rather than simply handing the winners event tickets.
From the moment they left home, the logistics had been taken care of. Flights, accommodation and transfers formed part of the journey, alongside VIP hospitality and the event itself. Instead of the customer having to build a trip around their prize, the trip became part of the prize.
It is a small distinction, but an important one.
The experience demonstrated what rewards can look like when they move beyond the transaction and become something tangible in a customer’s life.
And that raises an important question: what happens when there isn’t a major event like Red Bull Unlocked?
Duran explained that the everyday value of Absa Rewards remains central to the programme. Customers can earn value through the things they are already doing and spending money on, while the programme’s partnerships can create additional opportunities for savings, cashback and access.
Red Bull Unlocked therefore wasn’t positioned as a departure from the everyday benefits of Absa Rewards. Rather, it was an extension of them.
For customers experiencing the event through Absa Rewards, the message was simple: being rewarded shouldn’t only be about getting something back. Sometimes it can also be about getting somewhere you didn’t expect to go.
And on 26 September, that somewhere was Cape Town, surrounded by music, culture, friends and one of the city’s biggest nightlife experiences.
It was a compelling demonstration of how a rewards programme can move from being something customers see on a banking statement to something they actually experience.
