Manhyia South MP stands by criticism of Ghana football, clarifies astroturf comments

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Agyei Baffour Awuah, has defended his earlier comments on the state of Ghanaian football, saying his concerns are centred on restoring the fortunes of the sport.

In a statement, Mr Awuah said he had taken note of the response from the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following his remarks on Citi FM.

He clarified that he is serving his first term as MP for Manhyia South and noted that the constituency already has three astroturf facilities.

“I wish to clarify that I am only in my first term as the Member of Parliament for the great people of Manhyia South. However, it is important to put the matter into proper perspective: Manhyia South already has three astroturf facilities serving the constituency,” he said.

He maintained that his earlier comments about the state of Ghanaian football remain unchanged.

“I stand by my earlier submission on Citi FM that the current state of Ghanaian football is a matter of serious concern.”

According to him, football continues to play an important role in Ghanaian society, serving as a source of national pride and unity.

He therefore called on President John Dramani Mahama to take steps to help revive the fortunes of Ghanaian football and establish structures that will ensure the sport has a sustainable future.

“It is in this spirit that I believe President John Dramani Mahama must take every necessary step to help salvage and restore the fortunes of Ghanaian football, while ensuring that the appropriate structures are put in place to secure a sustainable future for the sport.”

Mr Awuah said the matter goes beyond individual interests, stressing that the future of Ghanaian football affects young talents and millions of supporters across the country.

“This is ultimately about our national pride, our young talents and the millions of Ghanaians who continue to invest their hopes and passion in our football.”
