Mahama calls for lasting Russia-Ukraine peace, welcomes Putin’s openness to talks

President John Dramani Mahama has called for a lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin’s openness to resuming trilateral peace talks.

Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, President Mahama said ongoing conflicts around the world had caused significant loss of life and suffering while disrupting global logistics and supply chains.

He stressed the need for sustained diplomatic engagement to resolve conflicts and secure lasting peace.

President Mahama’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue to explore avenues for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has had wider economic implications for countries across the world, including those in Africa.

Meanwhile, President Putin has criticised Western countries over what he described as neo-colonial practices, accusing them of using debt to maintain economic dependence among African nations.

The Russian leader’s remarks at the summit highlighted Moscow’s call for a shift in global power relations and greater economic independence for African countries.

The summit brings together African leaders and Russian officials to discuss cooperation in areas including trade, security, investment and development.
