WCED warns job seekers about fake teaching and exam assistant vacancies

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has issued a critical warning regarding a series of fraudulent online advertisements that misrepresent employment opportunities within the education sector, ***Cape {town} Etc ***reports.

With the growing reliance on digital platforms for** job searches,** it has become increasingly important for job seekers to remain vigilant against scams that aim to exploit the vulnerable.

Recently, the WCED has received multiple inquiries about a misleading social media advertisement that claims the Department of Basic Education is seeking unemployed youth to serve as examination assistants.

The adverts promise a remuneration of R8 230 for marking Grade 12 examination scripts in December 2026. This advertisement has been categorically identified as false, and the WCED strongly advises the public to disregard it.

In addition to this, the WCED has also been alerted to another fraudulent website that is erroneously advertising teaching vacancies in schools where no such positions exist. Several schools have confirmed the authenticity of these posts as dubious and emphasised that they were not authorised by the institutions in question.

As a result, potential applicants are urged to scrutinise the legitimacy of any claims made in job advertisements carefully.

Two websites identified by the WCED for false advertising are:

• Teaching Jobs & School Vacancies in South Africa (2026) | SA Teachers
• Examination Assistant Jobs

To avoid falling prey to these scams, members of the public should be cognizant of several warning signs in online employment ads. The WCED highlights the importance of recognising requests to apply via private email accounts, such as Gmail, as a red flag.

Legitimate job applications do not typically solicit submissions through private channels nor deviate from official recruitment processes.

To safeguard themselves, job seekers are encouraged to verify potential employment opportunities through official WCED channels before submitting any personal information or documentation. The following resources are crucial for authentic job listings:

• Permanent teaching posts are advertised exclusively through the WCED’s Directorate: Recruitment and Selection.

• The WCED’s official E-Recruitment System can be accessed at

  for educator posts.

• Unemployed educators seeking roles within the Western Cape public school system must register through the E-Recruitment System.

• Opportunities associated with examinations are listed on the WCED website at

  this page

  .

• School Governing Body (SGB) positions may be advertised by individual schools; verification can be done directly through the school’s website or by phone.

• The WCED explicitly states that it, including its Head Office, District Offices, and schools, will never request payment for job applications, interviews, or appointments.
