CHILDREN’S rights non-governmental organisation, Save the Children Zimbabwe, has engaged Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Richard Moyo to deepen collaboration on climate resilience and nutrition intervention programmes in the province.
Save the Children country director Bhekimpilo Khanye, accompanied by country representative Lucy Nyamutswa and education partnerships lead Sibongile Damasane, paid a courtesy call on Moyo in Lupane to align their field activities with government policy priorities.
In a statement, the organisation highlighted that the high-level engagement focused on mitigating the severe impacts of drought and food insecurity in vulnerable rural districts.
“The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing collaboration, including the Green Climate Fund-supported AY4SF Project in Binga and Umguza and the ECHO-supported Health and Nutrition programme in Binga, while also learning more about government’s plans to strengthen preparedness for the anticipated El Niño conditions,” Save the Children said.
The child rights agency emphasized that strong synergies with state authorities remain pivotal in safeguarding livelihoods amid escalating climate shocks.
“Strong partnerships with the government are critical to ensuring communities and especially children are better prepared for emerging climate and nutrition challenges,” the statement added.
Matabeleland North remains one of the provinces most vulnerable to recurrent El Niño-induced droughts, with districts such as Binga bearing the brunt of acute water shortages and high malnutrition rates among under-five children.
