Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), has deepened its technology partnership with Jiangxi College of Vocational and Foreign Studies, China, with the commencement of training in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and Python Programming.
The programme, being held at the university’s Main Library Hall, is part of the Tiangong Workshop Initiative, a Nigeria-China collaboration designed to promote technology transfer, knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship and digital skills development.
Vice Chancellor of IUO, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, described the partnership as another major step in the institution’s drive for technological advancement and internationalisation.
He said the training would equip participants with practical digital skills required to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
“The world is rapidly becoming technology-driven, and universities must remain at the forefront of this transformation.”
Ezemonye recalled that the collaboration had earlier taken two members of staff and 10 students of the university to China for an exchange programme last year.
During the visit, the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation in training, research and capacity building.
Ezemonye said IUO would continue to expand the relationship into other areas of academic, technological and research cooperation.
Chinese facilitators, Ouyang Pan and Wu Weixiang, are leading the current training programme.
Speaking on “Big Data: New Business and Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Nigerian Youths,” Pan said the application of data was no longer restricted to programmers and technology specialists but had become increasingly relevant to students, teachers and entrepreneurs.
“You do not need to be a programmer. Data is a thinking skill for every teacher and every student,” he said.
Pan said the ability to interpret and deploy data could help entrepreneurs identify emerging trends, understand markets and make better business decisions.
He encouraged participants to take advantage of freely available digital platforms and analytical tools, including Google Trends, TikTok Creative Center and Meta Business Suite, to develop their data skills and identify business opportunities.
The Tiangong Workshop Initiative will also provide online courses in Big Data Analytics, cross-border e-commerce and digital marketing, alongside practical workshops and exchange opportunities.
