Feature: How Mavis Kuukua Bissue Is Putting Ahanta on the National Map

For decades, the story of Ahanta West in Ghana’s Western Region has largely been told through its rich history, traditional institutions, coastline, tourism potential and the exploits of its historic leaders.

But since Mavis Kuukua Bissue Boateng became Member of Parliament for the area, another dimension has begun to emerge: the use of parliamentary representation to project Ahanta’s identity, interests and development agenda beyond the constituency.

Elected in December 2024 as the first woman to represent Ahanta West in Parliament, Bissue assumed office in January 2025, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in a constituency created in 1992.

Official parliamentary records show that she is a first-term legislator who serves on the Defence and Interior and Public Administration and State Interests committees, among others.

Yet, beyond the symbolism of becoming the constituency’s first female MP, one of the defining features of her early tenure has been her effort to bring issues concerning Ahanta’s history, language, culture and development into the national conversation.

Taking Ahanta to the Floor of Parliament

One of the clearest examples is her advocacy for the preservation of the Ahanta language, Ayinda.

On July 2, 2025, Bissue went onto the floor of Parliament to make a statement on the need to revive and integrate the Ahanta language into formal education.

She presented the issue not merely as a matter of cultural preservation, but also as one involving education, linguistic inclusion and the preservation of identity.

The parliamentary intervention was followed by the launch of the Ahanta Language Renaissance Project, through which the MP worked with education and traditional stakeholders to begin piloting the teaching of the language in schools.

Reports from the Ghanaian Chronicle, MyJoyOnline and the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly indicated that teachers were selected for the pilot programme, while education authorities, traditional councils, linguists and other stakeholders were brought together around the initiative.

The launch of the Ahanta Renaissance Project in Agona-Nkwanta also brought together traditional leaders from across Ahanta, many of whom appeared in traditional regalia.

For supporters of the initiative, the significance goes beyond teaching a language. It raises the broader question of how Ahanta’s linguistic heritage can be documented, taught and preserved for future generations.

More importantly, it has given the language a platform beyond the constituency, placing an issue of local identity within a national policy conversation.

From Language to Heritage

If the language initiative placed Ahanta’s identity on the parliamentary agenda, the Ahanta Heritage Month has expanded that conversation into history, tourism and development.

In July 2026, the maiden Ahanta Heritage Month brought together traditional rulers, government officials, diplomats, representatives of the diaspora and other stakeholders around the history and cultural identity of Ahanta.

Organised under Bissue’s auspices, the celebration was held on the theme, “The Untold Slave History of Ahanta,” with discussions focusing on reparatory justice, healing, unity and cultural renaissance.

The initiative also received endorsement from the Kingmakers of Ahantaman, who described the heritage programme as a vehicle for restoring the pride and prestige of the Ahanta chieftaincy institution while promoting sustainable development.

The programme deliberately linked history with tourism and development, drawing attention to historical landmarks including the dungeons at Princess Town, Fort Gross-Fredericksburg and the Cape Three Points lighthouse.

The unveiling of a statue of the executed Ahanta King, Otumfuo Nana Badu Bonsu II, at the climax of the 2026 celebration gave physical expression to the historical dimension of the programme. Chiefs, government officials, diplomats and residents attended the event.

The significance of the initiative lies partly in its attempt to move Ahanta’s history beyond local remembrance and present it to wider national and international audiences.

It also reflects a broader approach to constituency representation one in which cultural identity is linked to tourism, education and economic development.

A Constituency That Speaks Through Its MP

Bissue’s parliamentary interventions have not been limited to culture and heritage.

In February 2025, she made a statement in Parliament on sanitation, homelessness and slum proliferation, linking the issue to public health, youth employment and tourism.

She specifically connected poor sanitation to the economic and tourism prospects of the Western Region and her constituency.

Her parliamentary activities have also included issues connected to coastal development. Her office records a 2026 parliamentary contribution on the Western Region Coastal Development Bill.

At the constituency level, her engagement programme has included a 12-stop listening tour intended to gather concerns from residents on roads, healthcare, fisheries and youth employment.

These engagements point to a representation agenda that combines constituency concerns with issues capable of attracting wider policy attention.

The Meaning of the First Woman

There is another dimension to Bissue’s tenure that cannot easily be measured in parliamentary statements or development interventions.

Her election changed the political representation of Ahanta West by making her the first woman to represent the constituency in Parliament.

She secured 28,227 votes in the 2024 election, becoming the first woman to occupy the seat.

The significance of that achievement extends beyond the symbolism of gender representation. It also places attention on what she does with the opportunity created by that historic election.

Her public activities so far can broadly be viewed through three interconnected areas: development, identity and visibility.

The development component is reflected in interventions around education, healthcare, water and infrastructure.

The identity component is evident in the Ahanta language initiative and the heritage programme.

The visibility component is seen in her decision to take issues concerning Ahanta’s history, culture and development into Parliament and onto platforms capable of attracting national and international attention.

Together, these activities present a form of constituency representation that seeks to combine traditional development priorities with cultural and historical advocacy.

Selling Ahanta Beyond Ahanta

For a community with historic sites, a distinctive language, traditional institutions, a coastline and a complex colonial history, the question is not simply whether Ahanta has attractions.

The bigger question is whether those assets can be translated into recognition, investment, tourism and opportunities for young people.

Bissue’s heritage programme has sought to make that argument more explicitly.

The 2026 Heritage Month brought together government representatives, traditional leaders, diplomats and members of the diaspora around Ahanta’s history.

The initiative was also presented as an opportunity to reconnect Ahanta people with their identity, confront difficult aspects of the past and explore how heritage can contribute to future development.

That approach broadens the traditional understanding of constituency politics.

An MP does not only lobby for roads, schools and other physical infrastructure. Parliamentary representation can also provide a platform for highlighting the identity, history and economic potential of a constituency.

In Bissue’s case, Ahanta is increasingly being presented not simply as another constituency in the Western Region, but as a historical and cultural territory with a story that can attract national and international attention.

The Road Ahead

The early record, however, is only the beginning.

The longer-term test of the Ahanta renaissance will be whether the visibility generated by the language project and Heritage Month can translate into lasting institutions and measurable opportunities.

Can Ayinda become sustainably embedded in education?

Can the heritage programme develop into an annual platform capable of attracting tourists, researchers, investors and members of the diaspora?

Can historic sites such as Princess Town, Fort Gross-Fredericksburg and Cape Three Points be developed into sustainable tourism assets?

Can improved roads and infrastructure unlock the economic potential of coastal communities?

Can young people benefit from employment opportunities in tourism, fisheries, culture and the creative economy?

And can parliamentary advocacy secure the policy attention and resources needed to move these ambitions beyond programmes and celebrations?

Those are the questions that will shape the next phase of Bissue’s representation.

For now, her early record shows an effort to use the parliamentary platform not only to speak about what Ahanta needs, but also to draw attention to what Ahanta is.

From the floor of Parliament to the classroom; from constituency development concerns to healthcare and infrastructure; from Dixcove and Princess Town to the wider Ahanta traditional area; and from the revival of Ayinda to the international-facing Heritage Month, Bissue’s tenure has placed identity alongside development in the conversation about constituency representation.

Whether this period eventually develops into a lasting Ahanta renaissance will depend on what follows.

For the moment, however, Ahanta’s history, language and cultural identity have gained a more prominent voice and Mavis Kuukua Bissue is using her position in Parliament to make that voice heard beyond the constituency.
