Kenya Kwanza Allies Defend Elections Bill, Accuse Opposition of Spreading Propaganda

Kenya Kwanza leaders have defended the proposed changes to the Elections Bill, dismissing criticism from opposition politicians and insisting that Kenyans should be given accurate information about the legislation ahead of the 2027 General Election

The leaders have challenged claims that Parliament has removed the requirement for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to livestream election results, arguing that the debate should be based on the actual provisions of the law rather than political accusations.

The controversy follows the National Assembly’s passage of the Elections (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, with amendments on October 22, 2026. The proposed legislation has attracted public attention because of its potential implications for election administration and transparency.

According to the National Assembly’s clarification issued on October 23, lawmakers deleted Clause 22, which had proposed replacing Section 39 of the Elections Act. The move retained the existing legal provision requiring the IEBC to establish a mechanism for livestreaming results announced at polling stations.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed reports suggesting that Parliament scrapped the requirement, accusing those spreading the claims of misleading Kenyans.

The government’s position is that the existing livestreaming provision remains intact, although the Bill must still go through the remaining legislative procedures before the process is complete.

The debate comes at a critical time as political parties and electoral institutions prepare for the 2027 polls. The transparency of results transmission and declaration remains an important issue for voters, political leaders and election observers.

Beyond the disputed provision, the Bill proposes changes touching on voter registration, political party nominations, the recall of Members of Parliament and the handling of electoral disputes.

These proposals have placed the legislation at the centre of wider discussions about electoral reforms and the safeguards needed to maintain public confidence in the voting process.

The Bill will return to the Senate for consideration of the amendments made by the National Assembly, in line with the constitutional process for legislation involving both Houses of Parliament.

As the debate continues, the key question for Kenyans is whether the proposed reforms will strengthen electoral administration while preserving transparency and accountability ahead of the next general election.
