By A Correspondent| Three artisanal miners died after a mining shaft collapsed on them at Plot 55 Premier Central in Mutare on Monday afternoon.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the fatal incident occurred on 24 August 2026 at approximately 4:30pm while the miners were underground carrying out mining activities.
Police said the shaft, which was estimated to be about 20 metres deep, suddenly collapsed while the three men were working inside.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal mining accident which occurred on 24/08/26 at around 1630 hours at Plot 55 Premier Central, Mutare,” police said.
The three artisanal miners were trapped beneath the collapsed earth and died in the accident.
The incident once again highlights the dangers faced by artisanal miners operating in deep and potentially unstable underground workings, where inadequate safety measures can have fatal consequences.
Authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
