Moroccan customs officers seized more than 75 kilograms of cocaine from a truck entering the country through the Guerguerat border crossing on Sunday, a customs source said.
The haul weighed 75 kilograms and 132 grams and was concealed inside the fuel tank of the truck’s trailer, according to the source at the Customs and Indirect Tax Administration.
The empty truck, which carried Moroccan registration plates, was stopped in the crossing’s import inspection zone. Officers discovered the drugs during a routine examination using a border scanner.
Customs personnel conducted the operation in coordination with security services. Authorities did not immediately disclose the truck’s point of origin or the intended destination of the cocaine.
The driver was detained on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling attempt and transferred to the judicial police under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor.
Investigators are seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the shipment, identify possible accomplices and determine whether the driver was acting on behalf of a wider trafficking network.
No formal charges had been announced at the time of publication. The customs administration and national police had also not issued a detailed public statement on the seizure.
Guerguerat, located on the border with Mauritania, is the main overland trade crossing connecting Morocco with West Africa.
